World Wildlife Day is an opportunity to celebrate the many beautiful and varied forms of wild fauna and flora and to raise awareness of the multitude of benefits that conservation provides to people.

At the same time, the Day reminds us of the urgent need to step up the fight against wildlife crime, which has wide-ranging economic, environmental and social impacts.  Wildlife has an intrinsic value and contributes to the ecological, genetic, social, economic, scientific, educational, cultural, recreational and aesthetic aspects of sustainable development and human well-being.

For these reasons, all member States, the United Nations system and other international organizations, as well as civil society, non-governmental organisations and individuals, are invited to observe and to get involved in this global celebration of wildlife.

The secretariat of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), in collaboration with other relevant United Nations organizations, facilitates the implementation of World Wildlife Day.

At the GSPCA we rescue, rehabilitate between 1000 and 2000 wild animals and birds every year.

The start of 2014 has been a particularly hard time for the Bailiwicks wildlife with 1000's of seabirds being washed up along the shores of France and the Channel Islands.

Already this year the GSPCA has rescued Fortune the dolphin, Trinity and Eden the two grey seal pups, not to mention all of the hedgehogs, seabirds and others that have come into our care.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said 'It's great to celebrate days like World Wildlife Day especially after a period that has been so hard and difficult for many wild animals and birds with the recent horrendous weather and conditions.'

'We currently have 9 guillemots, 1 gannet, 2 seals, 21 hedgehogs and a few others at the GSPCA, and with the weather the way its been we are sure many more will continue to arrive.'

'We have our Big Fish Appeal as with all the seabirds and the 2 seals we are using buckets of sprats, sandeels, herring and mackerel and the easiest way is by using our Just Giving page.'

'Thank you to everyone that has donated so far and we all hope that today on World Wildlife Day those animals out there are all safe and well.'
