Between Monday 16th and Friday 20th July the GSPCA assisted for the first time with the IoD Management Shadowing.

The Institute of Directors or IoD in Guernsey has been placing Year 12 students (age 17) with local firms for over 20 years for a highly rewarding three day ‘ Management Shadowing Experience’. KPMG are proud to sponsor the programme and support the IoD in administering the scheme and providing valuable relationship management with over 70 firms to ensure the best possible experience for our candidates.

Each student spends three days with a Manager (or a selection of Managers) in a firm to gain an insight into what great leadership looks like. It’s completely different from work experience the student observes, take notes and ask lots of questions. Essentially, they are a ‘fly on the wall’!

After their placement, the students plan, create and  deliver a four minute presentation to their schools and a panel of IOD judges. The top ten presentations are given again at a prize-giving ceremony in October where an eventual winner will be chosen.

When KPMG approached GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne we were delighted to be involved with such a fantastic initiative.

Ella Huxtable who has carried out her Duke of Edinburgh and volunteered with animals for nearly a year at the GSPCA was the young student to come and spend her 3 days at the GSPCA where she learnt and experienced the hugely varied work of the GSPCA Manager and the team.

From learning all about the management of an animal welfare organisation to sitting in during a meeting with the architects, meeting visitors from the Jersey SPCA to the daily management of the organisation and even learning about the networking that goes on with many other groups, businesses and individuals.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “It was a real pleasure to host Ella on the IoD Management Shadowing at the GSPCA.”

“Running a Shelter 24/7 with 25 staff, 800 volunteers and over 500 animals means the work is extremely varied and Ella got a true taste of what goes on behind the scenes.”

“One of the things Ella helped with was a surprise Fire Drill to get all the team together not just for fire training which took place but also so the team could have a group photo as we are nominated for the Guernsey Press Emergency Hero Award.”

“Ella also learnt about the additional roles that I do such as being on the committee of the Association of Dogs and Cats Home which is made up of over 140 charities.”

“I look forward hearing how Ella’s presentation does and wish her all the very best in her future career aspirations.”

“There are many ways to get involved with the GSPCA and on Wednesday 1st August we have a volunteer induction at 630pm.”
