Yesterday the first Channel Island grey seal pup was rescued of 2017.

Found at Petit Pot in Jersey the young seal pup at only 18kgs so extremely thin with a number of injuries was rescued by the British Diver Marine Life Rescue volunteers and cared for overnight at New Era Vets in Jersey.

This morning the young seal pup was transported with BDMLR Marine Mammal Medic Caroline Stockhill to Guernsey and is now at the GSPCA Wildlife Rehabilitation unit in the seal intensive care room and is next to Sami the seal pup who was rescued in Jersey just after Christmas.

The young seal pup is yet to be named and will need intensive care around the clock.

Kevin Beausire GSPCA Staff Member said “We collected Caroline BDMLR Marnie Mammal Medic and the seal pup this morning from the airport and the young animal is now at our seal intensive care unit at the GSPCA.”

“The young pup is extremely thin and has a number of injuries so will need around the clock care.”

“It’s been lovely to meet Caroline from Jersey who is helping us out around the Shelter today and seeing the work we carry out.”

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “It seems the last few months have hit the local seal pups really badly with 5 sick pups being found over the last 6 months.”

“Sami the seal pup is doing as well as we can hope and continues on a variety of vet treatments and is now the neighbor of this new seal pup rescued in Jersey.”

“Sami is now eating solid fish on her own and we are appealing for donations to help her and the 350 animals at the GSPCA.”

“We haven’t yet named the new seal pup although a few ideas from Jersey have been offered.”

“The new seal pup is very weak and we will need to work around the clock for her to pull through.”

“BDMLR and New Era Vets have done a great job looking after the very poorly seal pup overnight and we will now do all we can to help get the pup back to the wild which will likely to take months with the next few days being the hardest.”

“A huge thank you to all involved with the seal pups rescue and to those that have helped transport it to Guernsey.”

“With the awful weather its likely other seal pups and wildlife may be injured and if you find any please do give us a call on 257261.”
