Last night 18 new volunteers attended the first ever GSPCA Volunteer Evening to find out how they can help and get the ball rolling.

GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne greeted the 18 new volunteers at the GSPCA who were interested in helping at the Shelter and the work we carry out every day.

The youngest was 13 who has to wait a few months before she is 14 and can then help at the Shelter.  A few that attended were looking to carry out their Duke of Edingburgh Award to those wanting to help walk and socialise the animals at the Shelter.  Others were interested in helping with fund raising, administration and many with the mucking out.

The evening started with a presentation of the work and history of the GSPCA which was followed by a first day induction on how to work safely when helping out in the many volunteer roles.

This was followed by Steve chatting to each of the new volunteers on how they could help and where their interest laid.

The new volunteers are starting in a variety of areas over the next few weeks and the team are looking forward to welcoming the new helpers into the GSPCA family.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said 'It was the first event of its kind we have held at the Shelter and it was a great success.'

'We are always looking for help in so many areas especially at this time of year with so many animals in need.'

'Due to its success we are looking at holding another Volunteer Evening on Wednesday 17th July but if anyone is interested in helping sooner then please check our website page http://www.gspca.org.gg/about/volunteers.'

'We have 200-300 animals in our care at any one time and a Shelter that is nearly 4 acres.  We need to provide a 24 hour service and there are so many ways in which volunteers can help and we are so grateful to those involved as every one helps makes a difference to animals in Guernsey whether its helping for 20 minutes or hours every day.'

'We would like to thank everyone that attended it was lovely to meet everyone and we are looking forward to getting them all involved at the GSPCA.'
