The GSPCA often receive calls from distressed animal owners for a number of reasons and this year one that has been highlighted is that of dogs attacking other animals.

It is often reported in the press regarding dogs killing chickens that aren't controlled but it doesn't stop there. At the GSPCA we often have other birds, hedgehogs, rabbits and even cats that are reported to the Shelter that have been killed by dogs that aren't under control.

Some of the current legislation regarding Control of Dogs in Guernsey is:

  • Dog owners should pay careful attention to where they must not allow their dogs, or dogs must be kept on their lead or under close control (e.g. children's play areas, quays and jetties, sports fields and bathing areas (beaches and La Vallette).
  • Dogs are not allowed on some beaches between 1st May and 30th September (Fermain, Petit Bot, L'Eree, Vazon, Cobo, Port Soif, L'Ancresse/Pembroke)
  • Owners are responsible for clearing up after their dog and disposing of their waste appropriately.

This weekend a cat unfortunately was killed by what is believed to be a dog attack. Cloud who had been adopted from the GSPCA by Becky Reid found her cat by the new wildflower meadow towards Moulin Huet bay.

Originally it was presumed Cloud had been hit by a car as she was laid at the side of the road, but further inspection by the vet ruled this out.

Unfortunately it does seem this is not an isolated matter, as just before Christmas Becky Reid's male tabby cat called Rowan also adopted from the GSPCA (pictured above) came home in a very bad way.  A trip to the vet showed that he had appalling injuries inflicted by a dog, which resulted in numerous operations, staples and drains.  The vet said he was lucky to be alive.

The GSPCA are asking dog owners when walking their dogs to please ensure their dog is kept under control and also that a dog in a public place that does not have an owner is classed as a stray and can find itself to the Shelter where penalties are issued by the States.

Becky Reid owner fo Cloud and Rowan said 'I was extremely upset to find my cat Cloud dead on the edge of the road following what looks like a dog attack.  I am even more concerned as this is the second time this has happened to one of my cats in nine months.  Before Christmas Rowan was attacked by a dog.  He survived, as he is a large cat, but he sustained horrendous injuries and required multiple operations.  This is a beautiful area for dog walking, but I would like people to be mindful of the local residents' pets and other wildlife in the area and keep their dogs on the lead.'

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said 'At the GSPCA we help owners with all sorts of situations and this is one of the saddest we see at the Shelter.'

'It is required by law for dog owners to keep their pets under control and when we hear of dogs that have killed other animals especially other peoples pets it is very upsetting for the team here and often it is the team here that have to call the owners to break the very sad news.'

'It is important to exercise your dog regularly but they should be kept under control.'

'If owners are needing training advice for their dogs we hold training sessions as well as others in Guernsey and we would ask that any dog owners that need help to please get in touch with Lorna Prince and her team of dog trainers here at the GSPCA.'
