Earlier this year Sarah Ozanne and Lucy Ogier (Animal Care Assistants at the GSPCA) organised a competition to increase awareness of Hedgehogs in Guernsey.

There were two classes - creating a 'Hedgehog Awareness Poster' and 'Build a Hedgehog House'.

We were amazed by the response and had some fantastic entries.

Haute Capelles School deserve a special mention for the work they put in to producing hedgehog houses.  It was very difficult for us to choose the winners.  There were some fantastic designs, with houses made out of wood, storage boxes and hanging baskets!

The effort and imagination put into all the houses was brilliant.

The winners of the competitions are as follows:

Poster Awareness Competition:

4-7 years: 1st - Thomas Merrien
                Runner Up - Jasmine Divall

8-11 years: 1st - Eleanor O'Meara
                 Runner Up - Emily Merrien
                                 - Fabienne Leatham

Build a Hedgehog House:

1st - Joel Dawe and James Allen - Joel and James build a two storey house with a non-slip slope inside and a tunnel entrance.  The roof and floor were removable for easy cleaning.  We loved the idea of a two storey house and how easily it could be taken apart to clean and check what was inside.

Runners Up:

Archie Ward and Barney Rhys Evans - Archie and Barney had a simple design with a sloping roof so rain would run off.  They put a cover over the entrance to prevent rain getting in and painted the box in camouflage colours.  The roof was also removable.

Leo Ozanne and Joseph Gaudion - Leo and Joseph built a box with a tunnel entrance.  The hog had to turn a corner at the end to reach a safe, concealed area to nest in.  Again, the roof was removable.

Billy Gregg - We felt we had to give Billy a special prize for creativity.  Billy made two hog houses out of hanging baskets that he cable tied together.  He they weaved palm fronds through the baskets to make a very camouflaged, natural hog house.  This was an idea we had not seen before and we very impressed!

Sarah Ozanne Animal Care Assistant and Sarah Creaey Animal Welfare and Education Officer took the tour and talk at the Shelter which was extremely well attended.

Sarah Creasey Animal Welfare and Education Officer said "On the day of the prize giving 50 people turned up for a talk, raffle and to have a look at the hogs we have on site."

"They were lucky enough to see some of the hoglets waking up for their supper!"

"The day was very good fun and we raised £236.86 to help look after hedgehogs in Guernsey."

"From all at the GSPCA thank you to everyone who attended!"

"We hope that the competition, talk and tour will have increased awareness of hedgehogs, and how we can help them with relatively simple measures, such as checking your garden before strimming, leaving a pile of leave for them to nest in and removing netting from the ground at night time."

"As the hedgehog becomes increasingly endangered in the UK, the work we do over here will become more important if we want to keep our prickly friends."

Sarah Ozanne Animal Care Assistant said "What a wonderful day it was on Sunday and also amazing entries to the competition."

"It was so hard to decide on winners as all the of the hedgehog houses and posters were lovely and so much effort put in."

"A special thank you must go to all of those that donated towards the prizes, all that got involved and all that supported on the day."
