From all of the animals and team at the GSPCA we all wish Beckie Smith now Mrs Bailey and her new husband Jono many congratulations.

Beckie is a real star at the GSPCA helping in all areas of work from the ambulance to the hospital department, running Birthday tours to helping on the front desk.

Beckie has been a volunteer and supporter at the Shelter for many years and recently GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne asked Beckie a few questions about her new role as an Animal Care Assistant which she started earlier this year.

Why did you want to work for the GSPCA?

I've always loved being around animals, and after travelling around Australia it made me realise that I didn't want to go into teaching, I wanted to aid animals. I volunteered at the GSPCA first as I had no experience but it didn't take me long to realise that this was the perfect career for me.

What is your favourite thing about working for the GSPCA?

Sharing my enthusiasm towards the animals at the GSPCA and also creating relationships with our regular boarders.

What would you like to see us develop, build or improve at the GSPCA?

I'm always excited about new developments at the GSPCA, like our pond. However, I would love to see Mr. Black have a little bit of TLC.

Also, I think it would be awesome to have an online staff timetable. It can be updated easily and you can check it when you are not at work.

What was your first pet?

My first pet was Pinky the hamster.

What is your favourite species and why?

Land animal; Lowland Streaked Tenrec because they are feisty little mammals. So small but a lot of attitude. I'm fascinated with the way they connect with each other and how to defend themselves from predictors.

Ocean animal; Either a whale shark or a Greenland shark. Whale Sharks are just so majestic, swimming along side one was the best thing I have ever done!

Greenland Sharks, not the most attractive of animals but the way they survive is just outstanding. The oldest one known to man in data is 400 years old!

What do you look forward learning more about at the GSPCA?

I do love learning about hedgehogs and rabbits! But all learning to good learning.

What would you like to see someone sponsor or donate towards at the GSPCA?

I would love to see new flooring in the kennels and the hog unit.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “A huge congratulations to Beckie and Jono on their big day last week.”

“Beckie is a real star at the GSPCA, always with a smile and willing to help any animal or team member in need.”

“Beckie started as a volunteer and this is a great way for someone to start if they are looking at an Animal Care career to get experience and training.”

“Our next volunteer induction is next month and is open to all but to help with the animals at the GSPCA you have to be 13 or over.”

“When we have vacancies at the GSPCA we advertise them online and on our website.”
