On Sunday 20th May the GSPCA celebrated animals in Guernsey with some 7-10,000 visitors to our Animal Welfare Seafront Sunday.

It all started at dawn in glorious sunshine and with over 100 stalls and things to do St Peter Port was bustling from first thing.

Stall holders and GSPCA team members got to see the Guernsey Ultra race start at 7am while they were putting up their gazebos and preparing for what was without doubt the biggest event of 2018 and one of, if not the best ever Animal Welfare Seafront Sundays in our 7 year history of running them.

At 10am the day officially started with a packed seafront of stalls, animals, musicians and so much to do and see.

The GSPCA have to thank so, so many that helped make the day such a huge success.

Rainbow Childcare ran the free kids zone which was extremely popular from the slime making to the chalk drawing.

The fun dog show was the busiest we have seen with the results being –

Best Male Puppy

1st Kyga 3 month old malamute

2nd Canelo the staffy

3rd Eli 10 week old Yorkshire terrier

Then all the 1st place winners were brought in for Best in Show. Judge Anna Jane Brehaut from Canine Behaviour Guernsey and who helps run the Dog Training at the GSPCA assisted by Seb Goman GSPCA Animal Care Assistant had the hard decision which resulted in –

Best in Show was Phoenix

2nd Best in Show Mollie (golden spaniel)

3rd Best in Show Daisy

All the dogs were amazing and extremely well cared for and every one of the owners should be very proud.

Another highlight of the Animal Welfare Seafront Sunday with the Giant Animal mascot 5-a-side which took place just after the fun dog show.

First round teams or semi final results were -

The Plough Inn (A team) 2 v 3 Isabelle Vets

The Plough Inn (B team) 5 v 6 Ravenscroft

The Final

Ravenscroft 5 v 4 Isabelle Vets

The Super final

Ravenscroft 3 v 3 The GSPCA team including Bernard the GSPCA Mascot, Daniel the Island FM Donkey and Roary the GFC Lion.

This meant the Super Final went to penalties and despite a brave effort by the GSPCA team, Roary the Lion and Daniel the Donkey, Ravenscroft were the overall 2018 champions of the Animal Welfare Seafront Sunday Giant Animal Mascot 5-a-side.

All 4 games were hugely entertaining and kept the crowds laughing and smiling in the Guernsey sunshine.

The musicians entertained the crowds and a special thank you all of them including Erin Vaudin, Seigneur Hedge Veg, Imogen Hayman, Mancini and Me, Guernsey’s Morris Dancing team Belles and Broomsticks, Harry Rose and Chris Taylor.

A big thank you has to go to Island FM and DWA Flooring who gave so much air time in the run up to the Animal Welfare Seafront Sunday and to the live coverage on the day.  Also they brought the Cash Shower along which added to the funds raised on the day.

We really couldn’t make the seafront come alive without the amazing 100+ stall holders, alfresco restaurants, market traders, charities and food vendors that help make the Animal Welfare Seafront Sunday such a special day.

We must thank the States of Guernsey, Guernsey Police, G4S, Guernsey Harbour, the Probation team and those that helped with the security and the barriers, also to St Peter Port Constables and the Guernsey Fire Service who allowed our banner for our event on Smith Street.

Beckie Bailey one of the GSPCA staff ran the animal area which was hugely popular and resulted in lots of animals finding new and loving homes like Filigree the guinea pig who was extremely poorly when he first arrived and is now in his loving new home.

Without the volunteers, staff, helpers and van drivers the day couldn’t have taken place and to those and everyone that supported a huge thank you.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “What an amazing 7th Animal Welfare Seafront Sunday we had on the 20th May.”

“Without doubt it felt like the busiest and best we have ever run and to have a day to celebrate animals in Guernsey really does warm the heart.”

“From start to finish the Animal Welfare Seafront Sunday is the biggest day in the year for the GSPCA and there are so many thanks to so many people that help us put on what we hope is a day for all the family and for many pets to.”

“We raised over £6,000, found animals homes, spoke to those wanting to volunteer, started new volunteers, educated many about the work that we do, we have a new Corporate Angel Pen Pal Sponsor and so much more came out of what was truly a wonderful day.”

“The two major highlights were the fun dog show and the Giant Animal Mascot 5-a-side which were once again massive successes.”

“The free child’s zone was also a massive success and a huge thanks to Rainbow Childcare for taking care of the children and the fancy dress competition.”

“The weather was amazing and it was so wonderful to see such an amazing community day and from all at the GSPCA to all involved we cannot express our thanks and gratitude.”

“One of my highlights from the Animal Welfare Seafront Sunday was that Filigree the guinea pig who came along to the day and who was in such a bad way when he arrived at the GSPCA last year is now in a loving new home thanks to someone meeting him at the Animal Welfare Seafront Sunday.”

“We are already planning for next years Animal Welfare Seafront Sunday and anyone that wants to be involved we would love to hear from them.”

“Before that we have a full summer and winter of events and we always love to attend community days where we can promote our work and raise the much needed funds for the many animals in our care, so please do get in touch if you would like us to come along.”

“We will be at the Arts Seafront Sunday, Motor Seafront Sunday and Guernsey Marathon Seafront Sunday so please do pop along to these great community events as well as the many others you will see us at.”
