Last month during the second week of April the GSPCA assisted for the second time with the IoD Management Shadowing.

The Institute of Directors or IoD in Guernsey has been placing Year 12 students (age 17) with local firms for over 20 years for a highly rewarding three day ‘ Management Shadowing Experience’. KPMG are proud to sponsor the programme and support the IoD in administering the scheme and providing valuable relationship management with over 70 firms to ensure the best possible experience for our candidates.

Each student spends three days with a Manager (or a selection of Managers) in a firm to gain an insight into what great leadership looks like. It’s completely different from work experience the student observes, take notes and ask lots of questions. Essentially, they are a ‘fly on the wall’!

After their placement, the students plan, create and  deliver a four minute presentation to their schools and a panel of IOD judges. The top ten presentations are given again at a prize-giving ceremony in October where an eventual winner will be chosen.

When KPMG approached GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne last year and again this year we were delighted to be involved with such a fantastic initiative.

Morgan Jones from Herm who has supported the GSPCA in many ways over many years was the young student to come and spend her 3 days at the GSPCA where she learnt and experienced the hugely varied work of the GSPCA Manager and the team.

From learning all about the management of an animal welfare organisation with eh GSPCA Manager to spending time with the GSPCA Welfare Manager, GSPCA Community and Training Officer and man of the team Morgan got to see a great deal in her short time at the GSPCA.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “It was a real pleasure to host Morgan on the IoD Management Shadowing at the GSPCA.”

“Running a Shelter 24/7 with 25 staff, 850 volunteers and over 500 animals means the work is extremely varied and Morgan got a true taste of what goes on behind the scenes.”

“Over many ears Morgan has run fund raisers for the GSPCA in Herm and it was wonderful to finally meet her and talk to her about her career aspirations.”

“We look forward hearing how Morgan’s presentation does and wish her all the very best in her future career aspirations.”

“There are many ways to get involved with the GSPCA and on Liberation Day we have our next volunteer induction at 630pm.”

Morgan Jones said “Last month I spent 3 days with the team at the GSPCA to get an insight into what it was like running a charity.”

“Over the 3 days I met a variety of different people who I got to speak to about what they do and why they enjoy working at the GSPCA.”

“I learnt so much about the struggles of running a charity but also about the many positives that come from it.”

“My favourite part was being able to spend the afternoon helping out in the kennels and being able to talk and spend time with their animal welfare manager who gave me an insight into her role and what she does.”

“Thank you so much for looking after me for the 3 days, I thoroughly enjoyed them.”
