On Monday a stray tortoise was brought into the GSPCA.

'Hugo' as staff and volunteers have named the male, adult Herman's tortoise was found in St Saviour's.

Hugo is quite distinctive with an under shot jaw and a deformed front right leg.

Each year we see around 30 stray tortoise handed into the GSPCA and we find the owners for nearly every one.

Thankfully he is safe and warm at the GSPCA, but we are appealing for the owner to come forward.

If you think that this may be your lost tortoise then please call the GSPCA on 257261 or pop into the Animal Shelter in St Andrews.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager "Social media makes a huge difference in reuniting stray animals and we would ask the public to please share this picture of 'Hugo' as we have called him, as it has certainly helps speed up the time in finding owners for lost animals."

"We currently have this stray tortoise at the GSPCA Animal Shelter which is an adult, male Herman's tortoise who was found in St Saviour's."

Yvonne Chauvel Senior Animal Care Assistant said "Hugo isn't the only tortoise at the GSPCA as we have five residents that live with us here in St Andrews."

"The five tortoise we have are Hilda who is 61 years old, Hugh, Tony, Ridley and Scramble the youngest at around 4 years of age and they all help us with the educational work we carry out every year and live on our Tortoise Top Hill."

"Did you know a group of tortoise is called a 'Creep' and where they would live is called a 'Rockery'."

"We would love to find the owner of 'Hugo' as we have called him and if anyone has any information please do get in touch with us at the GSPCA."
