The GSPCA continues to help growing numbers of pigeons with Pigeon Paramyxovirus.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “Since the 1st January the GSPCA can sadly confirm that Pigeon Paramyxovirus has killed over 100 pigeons in Guernsey and numbers continue to grow.”

“Every day and night the GSPCA are called out to very sick and injured pigeons and due to the terrible effects of the disease there is less than a one in ten chance we can help save those we are called out to.”

“If you find a sick or injured animal you can call the 24/7 GSPCA Emergency Number on 01481 257261. While we are in lockdown please call us before visiting the Shelter.”

“Due to the numbers of deceased birds the States of Guernsey have issues advice of what to do if you find deceased birds and the importance of washing hands after handling them.”

“It continues to be extremely important that owners of poultry and pigeons ensure they take steps to ensure their birds and their feeders are away from possible wild birds.”

“Although we believe most racing pigeons are supposed to be vaccinated we have received a racing pigeon infected with the disease.”

The States of Guernsey put this information out earlier today on their facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/StatesVet

‘!PIGEON VIRUS UPDATE!

We understand that there is some uncertainty about what to do if you come across a dead/sick pigeon during the current outbreak of Pigeon Paramyxovirus so we thought we would provide some clarification.

If the bird is dead, please put it into a bag and then dispose of it in general black bag waste. There is no need to call us or the GSPCA.

If the bird is still alive but seems sick, please call the GSPCA (01481 257261)

Always wash your hands after handling wildlife!

Thank you and stay safe!

Steve continues “It is so sad that during #GSPCAPurpleWeek we are having to deal with something so sad.”

“Each year to mark our anniversary we hold our #GSPCAPurpleWeek and this year we see our first ever in lockdown.”

“With few fund raisers and next to no boarding due to lockdown the GSPCA income has been hit hard and we need your support now more than ever.”

“There are many ways you can help support our vital 24/7 work and donate or raise funds for the hundreds of animals in our care.”

“With over 130 hedgehogs, 3 seal pups, dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, fish, reptiles and many birds we help over 3000 animals through the doors every year.”

“With so many animals in our care we would love you to join our sponsor scheme to help us each month.”

“Just a couple of pounds each month can make a massive difference in helping the animals in our care and to find out more please go to http://www.gspca.org.gg/sites/default/files/Angel%20sponsor%20form%20special%202018%20new.pdf .”

“We have been working hard not only to care for the many animals and carry out our rescue work, but also reviewing our strategy.”

“Here is some information for those not familiar with what we are trying to achieve and we couldn’t do this without your support and we really hope you will join in with #GSPCAPurpleWeek.”
