Last night the GSPCA and Pet concern held a senior cat re-homing event aimed at senior citizens, but open to all.

PET CONCERN is a charity that enables older people to keep and care for their much-loved cat or to help look after a new cat that has entered their life.

They can help with giving medication, preparing and cleaning litter trays, grooming, feeding, cat food shopping and also providing transport for the owner and cat to the vets.

Sometimes older people are put off from re-homing a cat as they feel they are not active enough or able to physically care for them which is such a shame as cats can bring so much love and companionship to a home and an elderly person.

Sue from Pet Concern was on hand last night with GSPCA team members to chat to those looking for older cats.

Thanks to the evening we found four of our older cats new owners and all of the GSPCA team are over the moon from the success of the event.

Before the night, Jingles was reserved thanks to a poster about the Senior Kitizen evening. She has been at the GSPCA since March last year and is 14 years with a hyperthyroid.  The older cats with medical problems are often passed by and we are so happy that Jingles has been reserved for a forever home. Milo was also booked only days before the event who is 11 and has some joint issues.

At the start of the evening Millie was reserved and at nearly 11 ½ years old this lovely tortie cat will hopefully be heading to a lovely new owner very soon.  Millie seemed very taken with her possible new owner and family and will hopefully be on route to her new home soon.

Dot at 8 years of age is one of our most nervous cats but when the new perspective owner was introduced last night it must have been love at first sight as both were taken with one another.

Cats, like people, are living much longer these days and at the GSPCA due to the many older cats and also cats in need of a quiet home we held the Senior Kitizen evening which has proved a huge success.

Anna Paint Senior Animal Care Assistant "We recently had a meeting to discuss how to find our older cats a home and decided that running a special night might just help find them that forever home."

"We have some great links with the Pet Concern team that help a number of islanders care for their pets and they too want to help us find some of our older cats find a forever home."

"The Senior Kitizen and Senior Citizen evening was fabulous and we are so pleased how well it went."

“Some of our longest stay cats like Dot who is often very nervous found her perfect new owner.”

Ashleigh le Page Animal Care Assistant said “I could cry I was so happy when we found Dot a new owner.”

“It was so lovely to meet such nice people and find Dot, Jingles and Mille a new home.2

“Since advertising the event we also found Milo who is 11 a new home and he has some joint problems.”

Michelle Champion GSPCA staff member said "We are all so happy that 4 of our older cats found homes thanks to the Senior Kitizen evening."

“We kept the charity shop open late and also put on refreshments for all those that came along.”

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "The team last night put on an amazing Senior Kitizen event which has resulted in 4 of our older cats find new homes."

“The team were so happy when Dot was reserved and Millie last night and before the event Milo and Jingles thanks to the promotion and posters for the evening.”

“A huge thank you to all that helped put on the event last night and especially to the lovely new owners who are having their home visits and hopefully new felines very soon.”

“There are many more cats in need of homes and many other animals so please do contact us if you can help offer one or more a home.”

"If you can't offer an animal a home there are many ways to support our work from sponsoring an animal pen to sharing their details on social media."
