Many of us love to enjoy the sunny warm weather but we are urging pet owners to be mindful of their animals.

Don't leave your dog alone in a car.

The GSPCA has recently received a large number of calls from concerned members of public about horses and other animals in wet and muddy fields.

Unfortunately due to the very wet winter we have all had to endure here in Guernsey the GSPCA Welfare and Education Officer has had a number of animals that have been reported to the GSPCA.

Emma Trousdale GSPCA Welfare and Education Officer said ‘With such a wet winter many animals have been affected both wild and domestic.’

Some advice walking your dog in the snow from the GSPCA

Submitted by GSPCA on 15:53, 18th Jan, 2013 | 0

Some advice on walking your dog in the snow from the GSPCA -

Place your dog in a sweater or dog coat to help keep your dog warm.  If you have a white dog then a fluorescent coat is advisable and during the dark nights are ideal (these are on sale at the GSPCA Animal Shelter.) Don't forget to wrap up warm yourself.

Keep the walks short. Winter walks should not be as long as summer strolls. A couple of times around the block should suffice, but take care underfoot.

Taking care of your pets with the cold weather coming

Submitted by GSPCA on 14:09, 12th Jan, 2013 | 0

With cold weather coming and potential sleet and snow on the way the GSPCA want pet owners to consider all the animals of Guernsey. During a cold snap the GSPCA are on full alert, ready to deal with a variety of animals affected by the low temperatures.

But you can also do your bit to prevent animals suffering over the cold period.

Do you have a pond?

If you have a pond, make sure you check it every day for ice, as toxic gases can build up in the water of a frozen pond. These can kill fish or frogs that are hibernating at the bottom.

Hedgehog haven for the lucky ones, but what do you do if you see a hedgehog at this time of year?

Submitted by GSPCA on 20:13, 11th Dec, 2012 | 0

Last night the GSPCA had a young hedgehog that if had been left to fend for himself he surely wouldn't of made it through the winter.

Hedgehogs would normally be hibernating at this time of year, but due to the mild Autumn and late litters of hoglets many hedgehogs are still awake and many not large enough to sleep through the winter.

Firework advice from the GSPCA

Submitted by GSPCA on 14:13, 28th May, 2012 | 0

Fireworks are exciting and pretty to look at and it is fun to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee with a bang, but for our animal friends this can be a nightmare. Many animals domestic and wild suffer needlessly every year due to fireworks.

The GSPCA would like to encourage everyone where possible to attend organised events as this time of year there are many of our wild animals and birds rearing young and we want to reduce their stress as much as possible.
