At the GSPCA we are often called regarding abandoned animals.

Last week a concerned member of public spotted a trio of Grey Silkies wandering around the Vale Castle area.

The birds were quite nervous and wasn't able to catch them so called in the GSPCA to assist.

Geoff George the GSPCA Animal Collection Officer attended the seen a number of times last week before he finally managed to catch them.

Safe and sound now at the Shelter they are doing well and there is a home already lined up for them.

Geoff George said 'We often get calls of chickens and other poultry and it is always a good idea to ask the houses in the area if they know who the birds may belong too.'

'It is likely that these birds were purposely abandoned but it is hard to say.'

'They are putting on weight and we have named the Grey Silkies Charles, Tamara and Lucinda.'

'We often have poultry looking for good homes at the Shelter so please get in touch if you are looking for some feathered friends.'

'If you see any animal being abandoned on purpose please call the Shelter with the details and if possible a picture if you are able to safely do this.'

For details on what to do if you see an animal being cruelly treated or abandoned please click here.

What to do if you see healthy stray poultry -

  • ask the neighbors in the area if they belong to them
  • call the GSPCA to see if they are lost as well as others - please click here for further details
  • If an owner cannot be found then please call for further advice. The GSPCA can certainly help with hens, but with cockerels the Shelter often has male birds needing homes and we have limited space but please call for advice on what can be done.

If you find any animal that is sick or injured please call the GSPCA 24 hour emergency line on 01481 257261 or transport them safely to the Shelter in St Andrews.
