Nearly two months on and Bonnie the injured seal pup who was found close to death certainly isn't as skinny any more.

Bonnie since the GSPCA rescued her from the base of a cliff on the south coast towards the end of January despite an early struggle to get weight on her has now nearly doubled her size.

At just 14kgs when she was carried off the beach and up a steep cliff was extremely weak and emaciated. Today she was weighed and totals just short of 26kgs which the team at the GSPCA are overwhelmed with joy in her progress.

When she was rescued she should have weighed in excess of 40kgs and this is this minimum weight she will need before going back to the wild.

To achieve this staff continue to feed large numbers of herring and some other whole fish to her with vitamin supplements each day.

Bonnie now has access to two pools and she is very much enjoying the larger of them.

Geoff George Animal Collection Officer and Bonnie's main carer said "It's amazing that she has put on so much weight and she grows stronger every day."

"Although she was very thin when I rescued her it wasn't easy getting her up the cliff and back to the GSPCA Ambulance."

"It was a real struggle getting weight on her in the first month as she was so weak but every day now you can see a difference."

"It isn't cheap to buy all the many fish we have to feed her every day and if anyone would like to donate towards her care please do get in touch."

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "It's been a busy few months with marine and aquatic life here at the GSPCA and is is amazing to see such a difference in how Bonnie has come along."

"When you compare how thin she was when Geoff rescued her to now you would almost say they looked like different animals."

"Feeding her around 5kg of fish as well as supplements every day means we continue to appeal to anyone who would like to help towards her care and thank those that have been kind enough to help so far."

"Hopefully in the next month we can get another 15kgs of weight and with some nice weather look to return her to our coast."
