Although we have already had baby hedgehogs or hoglets being born at the GSPCA over the last month, last Friday evening the GSPCA were called out to rescue 2 orphan hedgehogs who had sadly lost their mum, they were extremely cold and very hungry.

Only days old they were adopted by one of our staff and taken home with an incubator and specialist milk to be hand reared.

Sadly one of the hoglets didn't make it through the first night but one did.

She was named Norma and a week later after receiving milk every 3/4 hours we are pleased to say she is doing well.

Emma Topley GSPCA staff member and warden who was part of the rescue and has Norma in her care said “Norma is doing very well and if we hadn’t have been called to the freezing cold and starving hoglets both would have sadly died, so she is very lucky to still be with us.”

“Her eyes and ears have opened and she has lots of new spikes appearing daily, although Norma is still very wobbly on her feet she is starting to explore her surroundings.

“Yesterday she started on pureed meat mixed in with her milk, which she loved, to wean her into solid foods.”

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “Norma is a very lucky hoglet as she would not have survived if we hadn’t have been called at the GSPCA very late last Friday night.”

“Thankfully we have intensive care units and special hand rear milk which is what helped save her life.”

“At the GSPCA we have sick and injured animals arrive day and night and the intensive care units we use help save lives every day.”

“Currently we have over a dozen hedgehogs housed in intensive care units as well as injured and many baby birds.”

“So not only do they help hoglets like Norma, they also help us care for orphaned kittens to baby bunnies and many injured and oiled birds.”

“We would love ideally 12 of the new TLC-30 Advance Intensive Care units as many of our older units have been used day and night for 7 years and are in need of repairs and replacements.”

“They retail with carriage over £200 and we are appealing for anyone to help us purchase additional units as well as towards our much needed Wildlife Hospital.”

“With so many animals and buildings to care for at the GSPCA we have many Christmas Wishes and to visit others please visit http://www.gspca.org.gg/about/our-plans-wish-list .”
