At the GSPCA during the term holidays we run guided tours, but on Thursday we ran an exclusive surprise experience planned by a very loving husband.

A number of weeks ago, in secret Art Allen had been in touch with the GSPCA to arrange a surprise for his wife who was celebrating a milestone birthday and taking retirement from full time work.

Mid morning on Thursday Art Allen arrived at the GSPCA with his wife Jean who had no idea why she had come to the Animal Shelter in St Andrews.

On arrival GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne was there to greet them with a bouquet of flowers from Buttonhole on the Bridge to start the series of surprises.

The husband and wife had an exclusive tour of the Shelter starting with a photo at the front of the GSPCA with pup 'Molly Pop' before being shown around each of the departments and behind the scenes.

As we took them around the GSPCA Jean had the chance to handle, stroke and even feed many animals at the Shelter.

From baby birds to visiting the kittens the tour included seeing a baby hoglet being fed and even feeding the baby birds herself.

Not only did they get to see around the GSPCA they also had a tour around the new multi purpose animal welfare building.

After the tour the couple enjoyed a lunch and cream tea being served on the picnic benches next to our duck pond before being allowed to help walk the dogs and see the cats in for homes.

Before leaving Jean was presented with a GSPCA sweatshirt and a framed certificate from her visit with pictures of her day.

Jean Allen said before leaving "What a fantastic day, thank you so much."

"We've had a great time."

"I had no idea why we were here and was planning to on one of the guided tours."

"I never realised you did so much."

Husband Art Allen said "Thank you so much we have had a fantastic day."

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "I was approached by Art who earlier this year spent a day volunteering at the Shelter though his work place Specsavers."

"He wanted to do something really special for his wife Jean for her birthday and retirement and as we run exclusive tours we added a few extras and it all made for a wonderful day and the weather couldn't have been nicer."

"If anyone would like an exclusive tour or visit the Shelter for the next round of tours there is plenty of information on our web site or please do get in touch."

"We have minimum donations for certain aspects of the tours but we can make them bespoke when requested."

"It was a joy to take Art and Jean around and they got to spend a little time helping the team and met many of the 300 animals we have at the Shelter."
