Last night the GSPCA held the last volunteer induction of 2016 and for the first time welcomed volunteers at the age of 13 who can now help with animal care on site.

After a review of risk assessments, forms and our insurance we are proud to announce that volunteers from the age of 13 can now help on site at the GSPCA after completing a volunteer induction and forms.

With over 200 new volunteers inducted during 2016 we have had a huge array of helpers assisting us from those that have helped with one off events to those that help several days a week.

Lowering the age to volunteer has come as the age to start the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award is lowered from 14 to 13 years of age. Earlier this year on the 22nd September HRH The Earl Of Wessex, Prince Edward visited Guernsey meeting young islanders in celebration of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Diamond Anniversary.  During his visit he also met Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager with a number of the GSPCA resident tortoise and as election of students from Les Beacamps High School who are carrying out their Duke of Edinburgh.

Each year the GSPCA has well over 40 young individuals volunteering at the Animal Shelter as part of their Duke of Edinburgh and with the GSPCA lowering the start age for volunteering this will help the many 13 year olds starting this wonderful award.

Last night of the 18 new volunteers 14 took part to start their Duke of Edinburgh and under 16 with 7 being 13 years of age.

The induction was taken by GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne and staff member Sarah Langlois which involved a talk of our work, working safely at the GSPCA, handouts and dates set for all to start.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "For the first time last night volunteers from the age of 13 were able to attend our induction to help out at the GSPCA Animal Shelter. with the animals in our care"

"We have many volunteers helping that are 14 or above with over 100 helpers every week at the GSPCA in the many roles from dog training to cleaning the animals out."

"Every weekend and through the week we see dozens of young volunteers working towards their Duke of Edinburgh Awards and we are so pleased that we are able to lower the age for them to start to help at the Shelter as they have lowered the start age to 13."

"Last night we welcomed 18 new volunteers of which 14 attended so they can work towards their Branze Duke of Edinburgh."

"7 of the new volunteers were of the new age of 13 and it was lovely to see Molly and Maddie who have wanted to help for many years and been involved with a number of our fund raisers over the summer."

"The first of the new volunteers starts tomorrow morning and the 14 new Duke of Edinburgh placements start this weekend."

"It was lovely to meet Imogen, Tegan, Ekaterina, Oscar, Chris, Phoebe, Anna, Katelyn, Molly, Emily, Elisha, Elise, Cindy, Karen, Theo, Maddie, Caene and Zara last night and we look forward getting them all involved."

"We have already set dates for volunteer inductions for 2017 at the GSPCA Animal Shelter in St Andrews and a huge thank you to all that have helped and about to help during 2016."

"To attend a volunteer induction you don't need to book a place, if you have an interest in helping please just come along to find out more."
