The GSPCA currently have over 20 goldfish that were recently rescued from a pond in need of a home.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “Recently our GSPCA Welfare Officer Lorna Chadwick attending a pond where a lot of goldfish were in need of a new home.”
“Lorna spent some time literally fishing them out and we have already found a good number of homes for many of the fish but still have over 20 in need of a new pond.”

Jen Bradshaw said ‘As many of you know I am not a runner. Not even a jogger. Therefore taking part in the London marathon is a huge challenge for me. Also as part of this I have given up smoking also. It’s a lifestyle change, not just a physical challenge, mental too.
My aim is to complete the marathon, not fast and it certainly won’t be graceful!
The GSPCA would like to say a massive thank you to the 2023 Saffery Rotary Walk who recently announced the 26 charities benefiting from this years walk to be held in June.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “It was wonderful to attend a recent photo shoot with the Saffery Rotary Walk team and the other charities benefiting from this years walk.”
During half term the GSPCA as part of the GSPCA Purple Month held guided tours to raise funds, show those attending the facilities, plans for the future, talk about our future and all about our 24/7 work.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “We haven’t shown the public around the GSPCA since 2019 and it was wonderful to have groups in last week, which most were sell outs.”
“From toddlers to those retired we had a huge range of ages keen to learn about our work at the GSPCA, our past, present and future plans.”
The GSPCA are hugely grateful to the Pets at Home Guernsey store and the Pets at Home Foundation who continue to support the GSPCA into 2023.

Not only are we in GSPCA Purple Month celebrating 150 years the 22nd February is Nartional Wildlife Day.
National Wildlife Day is a very new holiday, having been founded in 2005 by Colleen Paige. Ms. Paige is considered one of America's leading Pet & Family Lifestyle Experts and wanted to bring awareness to the number of endangered animals that need to be preserved and rescued and also to acknowledge zoos and outstanding animal sanctuaries for everything they do to help animals.
When is National Wildlife Day?
Today is Shrove Tuesday also known to many as Pancake Day and many of us will shopping for our ingredients. The GSPCA would like to remind everyone to think of the produce that you are going to use and please look to buy Animal Welfare friendly products such as free range eggs.
Although the EU legislation has forced many battery farms to improve their standards, chickens that live as free range birds have a much better quality of life.
Not only do we celebrate 150 years and GSPCA Purple Month along with record breaking numbers of hedgehogs we also have a record number of hedgehogs.
At the GSPCA we currently have recently had up to 152 hedgehogs in our care.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “Many may think its Winter but with the weather almost over 5 degrees Celsius it is far too warm for hedgehogs to hibernate in the Channel Islands so many of our spiky friends struggle through the damp, wet months.”
“That means many our found thin, poorly and in very poor condition and require rescuing and care.”
This month we celebrate 150 years and GSPCA Purple Month.
As part of the celebrations we have planned Educational Guided Tours to see some of the areas of the Animal Shelter, look back at our rich history and the plans for the future.
This week you can see behind the scenes at the GSPCA.
We ask for a minimum donation of £15 per person and £8 per child, or £40 for a family of four and a 10% if you have an Islands Families card or an Angel Pen Pal Sponsor.
Today the GSPCA celebrated 150 years and what a day it has been.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “Today the GSPCA team, supporters and the island helped us celebrate 150 years since we were first founded.”
“It is wonderful that the GSPCA was founded on a day of love that being Valentines Day, as there is so much shared between all that support and carry out the 24/7 work not just for animals, but the community as a whole.”
“It has been an incredibly busy day at the GSPCA and one we will never forget.”
