The GSPCA has been highlighting the challenges of the current hot weather on our wildlife and every day rescuing animals suffering from the lack of food and water, as well as those sick and injured.
The GSPCA is also aware that many of our ponds around the island which are homes to an array of wildlife are suffering due to the lack of rain.
One of the main public ponds is that of the one in Saumarez Park which is at a very low level and has become extremely green due to algae and there has been sadly a number of dead wildlife been found in and around the pond.
With hot weather the GSPCA has been extremely busy with calls and reports from the public from dogs locked in cars, dogs being walked on hot pavements, animals in direct sunlight, wildlife in need and we want to remind all pet owners of the real dangers to their pets and how you can help wildlife.
With the extreme warm weather and direct sunlight, dogs and other animals whether in cars or their pens are potentially in a situation where you could kill your pet if it is left, regardless of the situation.
Over 6 weeks ago a Senegal Parrot was found in Vazon.
The very friendly adult Senegal Parrot arrived on the 25th June after being rescued by a member of the public and the GSPCA team were really shocked that an owner hadn’t come forward so we did a big appeal last week.
What happened next was a real surprise as an owner did come forward but she had reported her Charlie the Senegal Parrot missing in October 2015.
On the 21st July the GSPCA were called out to the Dragon Chinese Takeaway on the Bridge as they had found a stray snake.
The corn snake was in good health and transported to the GSPCA where we made it comfortable in one of our vivarium’s and put an appeal out for an owner.
That day we found the owner and later that evening they were reunited.
Geoff George GSPCA Animal Collection Officer said “On the afternoon of Thursday 21st July was called out to rescue a stray snake in St Sampsons.”
At the GSPCA we are extremely busy and we are currently looking for new volunteers to join the team and recruiting new staff.
On Thursday 3rd August we held the second volunteer induction of 2022 and greeted 3 new volunteers to the team.
All three started and helped over the weekend from walking dogs to caring for cats.
Next Induction dates set are:
630pm Thursday 29th September 2022
Others to be confirmed
Yesterday the GSPCA were called out to a car park near the back of the airport.
The call was originally for a toad but when we arrived we were faced with a large black lizard.
After a little confusion of what species the lizard was it was cleared up by the owner who had been looking for their missing lizard for over 6 weeks.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “There was a little confusion over the species of the stray lizard we had in yesterday, but thankfully the owner came forward.”
“The lovely black lizard is a chuckwalla and had been missing for 6 weeks.”
Today the GSPCA were called to the car park next to Guernsey Airport for a very unusual stray.
We were called about a possible toad and on arrival GSPCA team member was faced with a very different animal.
Neil Hughes GSPCA team member said “Just after 11am we were called out to Guernsey Airport.”
“The call was to go and help a poorly toad but when I got there it wasn’t a toad at all but a very black water dragon.”
“The lizard is now back at the GSPCA in one of our vivarium’s.”
At the GSPCA we hear so many amazing stories of ways supporters raise funds to help our 24/7 work and the animals in our care.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “A huge thank you to Ava, MMaisie, Evie and Isabelle from Vauvert Primary School.”
“There are so many great ways those wanting to support our work and these lovely young ladies made and sold bookmarks and raised an incredible £168.07.”
“From all of us and the animals at the GSPCA a huge thank you.2
