The hugely popular Viaër Marchi, hosted by National Trust of Guernsey on the first Monday in July, heralds the start of the Guernsey Summer season. Showcasing traditional Island crafts, favourite foods, music and dancing, this is a gathering enjoyed by generations of Islanders and return visitors since the 1970s.
As the sunny weather continues the GSPCA continues to receive calls and reports from the public from dogs locked in cars, dogs being walked on hot pavements, animals in direct sunlight, wildlife in need and we want to remind all pet owners of the real dangers to their pets and how you can help wildlife.
With the extreme warm weather and direct sunlight, dogs and other animals whether in cars or their pens are potentially in a situation where you could kill your pet if it is left, regardless of the situation.
On Wednesday GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne was joined at the Animal Shelter in St Andrews by 13 islanders attending a specially arranged GSPCA Dog First Aid training course.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “Recently I was contacted by Megan who enquired about running a GSPCA Dog First Aid Course for a group of her friends as they weren’t able to attend the course we held in May.”

The GSPCA and Autism Guernsey are delighted to announce thanks to our media partners Bailiwick Express this months edition of the Connect magazine has nine pages covering the Dolphin Discovery Trail including comprehensive maps of their location and details of many that have been involved in bringing this amazing trail around the island.
Today the first of a number of groups of Northern Trust staff came along to help out at the GSPCA.
Every year for over a decade each summer staff from Northern Trust have been helping the GSPCA in many ways which now numbers over 300 meaning more from Northen Trust have helped out than any other company.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “The team at Northen Trust are truly incredible and today we welcomed the first group of 3 volunteers helping out at the GSPCA.”
Every year as the weather warms and summer arrives some parents think of rabbits as an a pet for their child.
This week is Rabbit Awareness Week and our Smallies team who look after the bunnies in our care have been sharing special messages as they do on what we call Smallies Sunday’ each week.
We have seen incredible numbers of rabbits needing help in recent years with more rabbits needing new homes than dogs or cats.
Earlier this month many of the GSPCA team and supporters took part in the Saffery Rotary Walk.

June has been a very busy month for the GSPCA and on the 14th and 15th June exceptional busy not only with animals arriving and going, the BIGGEST BUILD but also with events.
On Saturday 14th June the GSPCA had a stall at Guernsey Together and were also invited to Government House to join the GSPCA Patron Lieutenant Governor, Lieutenant General Sir Richard Cripwell CB CBE along with hundreds of islanders and those recognised in the Kings Honours.
Once again we must say a huge thanks Julius Baer helping the GSPCA who this month helped out at the GSPCA.
We we cannot thank the Julius Baer staff enough for the amazing help on the 5th June 2025.
