As Guernsey’s beaches reopen to dogs today following the seasonal restrictions, the GSPCA are reminding dog owners to enjoy the coast responsibly and to be especially mindful of wildlife, including resting wading birds and seal pups, which are born around this time of year.
From 1st May to 30th September, dogs are not permitted on the following beaches:
These restrictions are now lifted, but the GSPCA urges dog walkers to keep dogs under control, avoid disturbing wildlife, and report any concerns about injured or distressed animals to the GSPCA on 01481 257261.
Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager, said:
“We love seeing dogs enjoying Guernsey’s beaches again, but this is also a critical time for wildlife. Seal pups are being born, and wading birds are resting and feeding. Please keep dogs away from these animals, give them space, and call us if you see a pup alone or a bird in distress.”
This year has brought significant challenges for the GSPCA in caring for seal pups. With the #GSPCABiggestBuildAppeal underway, the charity is currently operating out of temporary facilities while building a new Wildlife Hospital. So far, £1.5 million has been raised, but £3.7 million is needed to complete all the planned works.
Steve added:
“We’re incredibly grateful for the support we’ve received, but we still have a long way to go. Every donation helps us provide better care for wildlife like seal pups, birds, and other animals in need.”
