Last week the GSPCA celebrated 144 years helping animals in Guernsey with GSPCA Purple Week.

Many got involved and we are hugely thank you to all that supported and especially to a very special young man called Jack.

Jack Le Sauvage is 8 years old and goes to St Martins Primary School and is in Year 4 in Miss Dyke’s class.

Jack completed a 24-hour sponsored silence on Friday 17 February, during the GSPCA’s Purple Week – including a full day at school.

He could have waited to do it in half term the following week, but wanted to make it quite a difficult target, so asked his school if he could not speak for the day.

Everyone at school was very supportive and no-one tried too hard to make him talk. He was even called up on stage in assembly so his head teacher could explain to the school what he was doing.

Jack said “I did a tour of the GSPCA with my Cubs group and found it very inspiring.”

“We were very lucky to get a glimpse of Sami the seal and I felt sorry for the poor little hedgehogs.”

“Plus, the cats were really cute!”

“We found out how much it costs to run the animal shelter.”

“I love animals and don’t like it when they get treated cruelly, so I wanted to do something to help.”

At the GSPCA we asked Jack what are your favourite animals, Jack said “Pugs!”

“But my favourite dog is my Grandma’s dog Dinky who is an 18-year-old Jack Russell cross.”

We also asked what Jack thinks of the GSPCA, Jack said “I’m really pleased there is an organisation like the GSPCA who are helping animals that are either hurt or treated cruelly.”

Jack set a fundraising target of £20 but has so far raised £65 and is extremely chuffed.

Jacks parents Rick and Michaela said  “We’re extremely proud of Jack.”

“He’s very kind and a real animal-lover, though constantly frustrated that we won’t let him get a pug.”

“He really threw himself into this project, from coming up with the idea himself, to creating a poster and sponsorship form, and arranging with school what day he could do it.”

“As a typically noisy 8-year-old, it was definitely a challenging task for him to complete, but he did it brilliantly.”

“We didn’t like not hearing his voice for a whole day – but he’s made up for it since!”

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “It was wonderful to meet Jack and his fellow cubs a couple of weeks ago when we took them around to see the animals at the GSPCA.”

“It was wonderful when Jacks parents contacted to explain how their son was inspired by our work and how he wanted to help during GSPCA Purple Week.”

“What a wonderful story and fantastic amount raised to help the many animals in our care.”

“It really warms the heart when we are contacted by those that deeply care for animals and want to help with their care.”

“Although Jack said he was inspired by the work we do at the GSPCA he is a true inspiration and wonderful lad who his parents can be extremely proud of a compassionate and caring young man.”

“From all at the GSPCA a huge thank you and we are going to invite him up with his parents to see more of the Shelter this week.”

"If you would like to do something special for the animals in our care please do get in touch."
