The GSPCA never know what we will be called for or when but on Saturday the last day of lockdown a real challenge to help rescue an injured bat was called in.

Beckie Bailey GSPCA Animal Care Assistant said “Did you read our post at the weekend about a bat needing a boat ride from Sark to Guernsey!”

“On Saturday the Shelter was struggling to get permission to collect the bat from Sark as the islands were still in phase 2.”

“However, Sunday morning we had a very positive phone call!!!! We had permission to collect the bat!!”

“The bat arrived safely into Guernsey Sunday evening.”

“A special thanks to Sark Constable, Gavin the transporter and go-between, the Skipper of the Fishing Boat - Dan, and the finder Sarah.”

“We would also like to say thank you to everyone who phoned up to offer advice and transport for this little guy “

“A little video attached to this post of him enjoying his dinner by going to https://www.facebook.com/GuernseySPCA/videos/235923861548575 .”

“Hopefully he makes a fully recovery and is released back to Sark soon!!”

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “With over 2000 wild animals through our doors every year we are kept busy 24/7 both rescuing them and caring for them.”

“We often have very challenging rescues and during lockdown we have faced all sorts or issues to ensure the safety of all involved but we strive to do all we can not only for the animals but also for our team and the community.”

“A huge thanks to Beckie for spending so much time trying to get the poorly bat to Guernsey and she is one of the main bat rehabilitators in Guernsey so is now in her care.”

“It is really important if you find a bat injured or otherwise you do not handle it without gloves as if you are bitten they can cause you potential harm with the main concern although very low risk the risk of rabies is a possibility.”

“The best thing to do is to call us at the GSPCA 24/7 if you find an injured bat on 01481 257261 and you can see more info by going to http://www.gspca.org.gg/animals/wildlife-advice .”

“If you are undergoing building works and you discover bats it is extremely important you do not disturb them and call for advice.”

“Bats will be coming out of hibernation at this time of year so do keep an eye out for them and if you can put bat boxes up around your garden you can help this wonderful little creatures.”

“With few fund raisers and next to no boarding due to lockdown the GSPCA income has been hit hard and we need your support now more than ever.”

“There are many ways you can help support our vital 24/7 work and donate or raise funds for the hundreds of animals in our care.”

“With over 140 hedgehogs, 3 seal pups, dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, fish, reptiles and many birds we help over 3000 animals through the doors every year.”

“With so many animals in our care we would love you to join our sponsor scheme to help us each month.”

“Just a couple of pounds each month can make a massive difference in helping the animals in our care and to find out more please go to http://www.gspca.org.gg/sites/default/files/Angel%20sponsor%20form%20special%202018%20new.pdf .”

“To make a donation you can go to https://giving.gg/donate/charity/2/Guernsey-Society-for-the-Prevention-of-Cruelty-to-Animals-(GSPCA) .”

“We couldn’t do so much without your support and here a few ideas of how you can help us help animals in Guernsey.”
