After a check over today the GSPCA can confirm that at least one of the 3 female guinea pigs that were found in the same box as 4 males in St Martins earlier this week is pregnant.

We currently have a total of 14 adult guinea pigs at the GSPCA and will have many more in the next month or so.

The gestation period of guinea pigs is approximately 2 months and they often have 3 to 5 offspring which are called pups.  For the vet to identify that at least one is pregnant then she is likely to be at least 5 weeks and due very soon.

These 4 boys are now called Mark, Spencer, George and Senner. Their female friends are called Puffin, Nat and Goodie.

The vet has confirmed Nat as pregnant and believes that Puffin and Goodie could possibly be but will need another week or two before we know for sure.

It is very important for any pet owners with rodents, rabbits or any species to ensure the correct precautions are taken with pets that aren't neutered to prevent unwanted litters and for more information they are welcome to contact the GSPCA or the local vets for advice.

Yvonne Chauvel Senior Animal Care Assistant said 'Last Christmas we were over run with rabbits and this year it looks like it will be guinea pigs.'

'If anyone is looking for a new pet then please think of those rescues and unwanted animals at the GSPCA Animal Shelter.'

'We have rabbits, ferrets, hamsters, guinea pigs, birds, chickens, cats, dogs and many more all in need of that wonderful new home so please get in touch to find out more.'

If anyone needs to rehome their pets or looking to adopt then please call the GSPCA on 01481 257261 or pop in for a chat with the Shelter staff in St Andrews.

We currently have many guinea pigs, rabbits, hamsters, ferrets, cats and birds looking for new homes and these can be seen by going to - http://www.gspca.org.gg/animals
