Early today the GSPCA had a call about a seabird tangled in fishing line.

The bird was discovered by mother Emma Lancaster and daughter Hallie who were out for an early morning sea swim at Belle Grève Bay.

The bird was so tangled it could neither fly or swim.

Thankfully the finders were able to free the bird but concerned for its welfare brought the bird to the GSPCA.

The guillemot arrived at the GSPCA just after 7am where GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne was able to accept Oreo and check the bird over and give the care it needed.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “Huge thanks to Emma and Hallie who rescued Oreo the guillemot this morning at Belle Grève Bay and also provided some video footageof the rescue.”

“Sadly every year we help over 1500 sick and injured birds in Guernsey and every month we help those affected due to human waste.”

“From fishing waste to oil every year birds die and have to be rescued due to the results of humans.”

“It is only a matter of time before we see animals injured or killed by the large number of face masks or disposable gloves around the islands.”

“It is so important to dispose of waste properly to prevent putting animals at risk and with face masks before disposing them as we should all do with the can ring holders is to cut the cords before throwing them away and certainly not just throwing them on the floor.”

“In 2021 we had an incredible and record breaking 2,589 wild animals and birds through the doors of which another record we helped 1,731 birds not to mention many other wild animals we help with advice and checks.”

“Oreo is so lucky but it is early days as we need to ensure the bird is fit and well before getting it back to the wild.”

“Oreo is being cared for by the team as is currently in our wildlife rehab area.”

“Oreo is quite lively and hopefully will make a full recovery.”

“It is horrendous when we see animals injured by human waste.”

“Every year we see animals caught in netting and affected by things discarded or thrown away.”

“With such difficult times we really need your support and to donate to our work and the care of Oreo the guillemot and other animals please call 01481 257261, at the GSPCA, Rue des Truchots, St Andrews, Guernsey GY6 8UD or online https://giving.gg/donate/event/5876/GSPCA-Coronavirus-Emergency-Appeal .”
