At the GSPCA until only 2 weeks ago we hadn't on record rescued a kingfisher.

Only days before the Animal Welfare Seafront Sunday we rescued Deborah Kerr as we named her from the model yacht pond and we released after 24 hours of care.

Yesterday a second kingfisher was rescued and brought into the Animal Shelter in St Andrews.

The majestic bird was found stunned on a drive in the Vale and is now in an Intensive Care Unit.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "It is amazing to think on record we have never had a kingfisher at the GSPCA Animal Shelter and in just two weeks we have now had two."

"We've called the recent kingfisher Shimmer and are hoping to release this amazing bird very soon."

"It's World Animal Day on Saturday and to raise awareness we have lots going on from a Volunteer Induction tonight 6.30pm, Animal Themed Bingo Night at the Last Post Thursday at 7pm, launching Paws for a Pint across many pubs, we have a stall in Market Square on Saturday and also Animal Castle Day at Castle Cornet all day Sunday."

A little on Kingfishers -

Kingfishers are small unmistakable bright blue and orange birds of slow moving or still water. They fly rapidly, low over water, and hunt fish from riverside perches, occasionally hovering above the water's surface.

They are a vulnerable to hard winters and habitat degradation through pollution or unsympathetic management of watercourses. We are lucky to have a population of kingfishers in Guernsey but they are amber listed because of their unfavourable conservation status in Europe.

Their Latin name is Alcedo atthis from the family Kingfishers (Alcedinidae). There are an estimated 3,800 to 4,600 across the UK.
