With the New Animal Welfare Ordinance (2012) coming into effect this week a meeting was held with those at the forefront of implementing and working with the new legislation.

Staff from Commerce and Employment including Mike Northmore and David Chamberlin the States Vet, staff from the GSPCA including the Manager Steve Byrne and Welfare and Education Officer Sarah Creasey and the Guernsey Police Training Officers PC Claire Milner and PC Adrian Walder met to discuss the changes and the implications to the animals of Guernsey and their owners.

From the responsibilities for stray animals to cruelty and neglect the GSPCA, Police and the States Vet look into reports across Guernsey and help animals around the clock 24 hours 7 days a week.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "The meeting yesterday was a fantastic chance for those working at the forefront of animal cruelty and neglect in Guernsey to sit down and discuss the changes in law, best practice for implementation and how we can work closer together with the Animal Welfare Ordinance 2012."

"At the GSPCA we have always worked closely with the States Vet and the Guernsey Police, but yesterday was extremely productive and useful with the new roles and responsibilities under the legislation being discussed."

"At the GSPCA we rescue, rehabilitate and rehome over 2000 animals a year and investigate reports of animal cruelty and neglect as well as educate owners regarding animal care on a daily basis."

"The Animal Welfare Ordinance is based around the five freedoms which are freedom from thirst, hunger and malnutrition, freedom from discomfort, freedom from pain, injury and disease, freedom from fear and distress and freedom to express normal behaviour patterns."

"There are many more parts of the law to be rolled out such as licensing pet shops and boarding kennels and we will be working closely together to ensure we are all aware of the changes and the implications."
