On the 15th July GSPCA team member Kevin Beausire was called out to Doyle Street next to the Swan Inn in St Peter Port for a poorly bird.

On arrival Kevin discovered an egret sat in a gutter and with some help from a kind workman managed to catch the poorly bird and return ‘Odette’ as she was called back to the GSPCA.

After a few days of intensive care and as she improved she went out onto the rehab pools and by Tuesday this week Odette was cleared fit to be returned to the wild.

Kevin who rescued the bird was also the one to release her back to the wild.

Kevin Beausire GSPCA team member said “I was called out to Doyle Street near the Swan last week to rescue an injured egret.”

“She was just sitting in a gutter and didn’t seem right so with some help we rescued her and I got her back to the Shelter where the team cared for her and got her back to being fit and well.”

“On Tuesday I got the chance to release her which was really great.”

“Within moments she was in the rockpools catching and eating fish.”

“The release site was much better than where she was found.”

Beckie Bailey GSPCA team member said “We have many sick and injured wild birds in our care but normally from St Peter Port it is pigeons and gulls that we help and not egrets.”

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “We have a long history helping sea birds as we have records from around 100 years ago which explain the work we use to do helping them.”

“It was great that Kevin got a short video clip of Odette’s release.”

“We don’t see many egrets come into our care so to get her back to the wild is really fantastic.”

“Every day is a real struggle to raise the funds to run the GSPCA and help birds like Odette during these difficult days.”
