Over the last two months the GSPCA has both been extremely busy with an abundance of hedgehogs needing rescue and our care as well as those being ready to released to the wild.

Some of those being released back to the wild were hand rears from 2018 and last month one of the largest groups were released.

On the 16th May GSPCA Animal Care Assistant and Volunteer Sarah Ozanne who is also a Vet Nurse from Isabelle Vets boxed up 8 hedgehogs that were healthy and ready for the wild and took them to a carefully selected location for their return to where they belonged.

Every hedgehog that arrives or is rescued is named by the finder or in some cases a member of the GSPCA team and Marias, Harry, Blackberry, Cheeky, Tamzin, Bailey, Sonic Boom and George were those in the group that Beckie and Sarah released.

Beckie Bailey said “It is always amazing when we are able to return any wild animal back where they belong.”

“Each of the 8 hedgehogs all came in needing our help.”

“Bailey was one of those found extremely young without its mother and I got to take him home and hand rear the hoglet and it was wonderful to see him back in the wild.”

“Others came in extremely thin or with injuries, mange or covered in parasites.”

“One hedgehog George we returned back to the same location as he only came in a couple of day ago and is perfectly healthy.”

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “It was amazing to see the pictures from last months release.”

“An ‘array’ is the name used for a group of hedgehogs and what an array they were being released back to the wild, looking so healthy and sporting the purple paint we use to identify them when they are released from the GSPCA.”

“We currently have 14 baby hoglets being hand reared and it is extremely busy with hedgehogs coming into the GSPCA.”

“Many of the new arrivals have strimmer and hedge cutter injuries, others are orphaned, we’ve had those covered in mange, some extremely thin and emaciated and it seems every few hours we are out rescuing hedgehogs or they are arriving into our care.”

“We currently have an incredible 127 hedgehogs in our care with a few additional babies that have been born which we can’t yet disturb as they are so young.”

“All of our intensive care units are full and often having to be doubled up and we are appealing for new units.”

“Last month some kind person bought a new unit for us and you can help us buy more of these much needed units by visiting https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/gspcaintensivecare or to buy one directly like the amazing person that donated this one for the Shelter please visit https://brinsea.co.uk/small-animal-care/tlc-intensive-care-incubators/tlc-30-advance/ .”
