On Sunday afternoon the GSPCA team were shocked to find two musk turtles dumped at the Animal Shelter in St Andrews.

Every day the GSPCA helps animals in need and for those owners that need to part with their pets no matter the circumstances we are here to assist them.

On Sunday afternoon Senior Animal Care Assistant Yvonne Chauvel was carrying out her duties caring for the many animals in her department when she came across the two musk turtles abandoned at the GSPCA.

The Shelter is manned 24/7 and on a Sunday the reception area is open between 11am and 4pm, as well as having our 24 emergency helpline on 01481 257261.

Despite all of this the two turtles were left on site at the GSPCA with no note and not in an obvious area and were thankfully found as they could have escaped the container they were in or even harmed as they were in unsuitable conditions on arrival.

Yvonne Chauvel Senior Animal Care Assistant said ‘I was shocked on Sunday to find 2 musk turtles dumped at the GSPCA.’

‘Although we have helped animals abandoned and even dumped in black bin liners like a hamster in St Peter Port a few years ago it is rare and we haven’t seen it for well over a decade at the GSPCA.’

‘If someone needs our help with their animals all they need to do is call 257261 or pop in for a chat.’

‘In the last few days we have helped many animals including a selection of reptiles and help over 3000 every year.’

‘Last month we had a stray musk turtle found near the Ville Au Roi which takes the numbers of musk turtles to 12 now at the GSPCA and we have seen a real rise in these pets being given up and found as strays which is a real worry.’

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said ‘All of the team were really shocked when we found 2 musk turtles dumped at the Shelter on Sunday as we are here to help and whoever did it obviously didn’t want to be known as we are on site around the clock 24/7.’

‘We are looking at our CCTV to see what happened exactly but at this stage we are unsure why they would just dump the 2 turtles as if they had asked for help we would have found them somewhere at the GSPCA.’

‘The rise in unwanted musk turtles seems to increase each year and we would urge anyone looking for a musk turtle as a pet to be properly prepared and to come to the GSPCA as we now have 12 in our care many in need of homes.’

‘The team have called the two musk turtles Melanie and Monica.’

‘Last month we helped a stray musk turtle form Ville Au Roi which we have called Billy No Mates.’

‘To see the animals in need of homes you can visit http://www.gspca.org.gg/animals or we are open between 11am and 4pm 7 days a week for viewings.’

‘If the person who left the turtles can get in touch with the details of their care it would be very much appreciated as it really helps to have the history of every animal at the GSPCA.’
