Petplan and the Association of Dogs and Cats Homes (ADCH) have joined forces for the seventh year of the Animal Charity Awards. The awards celebrate the outstanding work of staff and volunteers in animal charities and not-for-profit organisations across the UK, Ireland and Channel Islands.

The team at the GSPCA are overjoyed to report that Beckie Bailey GSPCA Animal Care Assistant and all round star for the Shelter from nearly 5000 nominations is one of three finalists for the Animal Charity Employee of the Year.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “Beckie Bailey is an incredible, caring and wonderful team member.”

“Beckie joined the team as a volunteer in March of 2016 and within 6 months became a paid member of staff and since that time she has flourished into an outstanding Animal Care Assistant.”

“From fostering baby bunnies to hoglets she is often taking her work home. In her spare time she has helped use her artistic skills to brighten areas of the Shelter with murals and she is currently doing a bluebell wood painting for our new Chapel of Rest.”

“Beckie primarily works on the Small Animal, Bird, Reptile and Wildlife departments but she is always on hand to help wherever needed from helping cover our 24/7 ambulance to the night duties at the GSPCA.”

“Beckie carries out educational talks and has been incredible with the birthday and public tours we run at the GSPCA and the feedback from all that meet her is always full of praise and kind words.”

“Beckie last year was nominated and a finalist in the Guernsey Pride Awards in the Carer of the Year category which was a public vote and we were all extremely proud of her and she was incredibly humbled.”

“Beckie is often the first one into work and the last to leave, such is her dedication to her department and areas of work. She takes great pride in what she does and is always looking at ways and means to improve her area of work.”

“Beckie has always been amazing in the use of the GSPCA social media and ensuring pictures and videos are taken of stories that would interest the community and also in her spare time creates posters to help publicise the animals looking for homes and work of the GSPCA.”

“Beckie is about to be one of three to be the first to under go the first ever animal care qualifications in Guernsey.”

“The GSPCA working alongside a number of agencies and funders are just setting up NVQs in Animal Care and such is Beckies keen attitude that she is one of the first to under go the training.”

“Beckie has been key in helping with a number of recent cruelty cases and challenging situations.”

“One that stands out were nearly 50 ducks, geese and a turkey were rescued due to nearly starving to death in a large greenhouse in squalid conditions.”

“This was a major job in the morning on one of the hottest days of the year and Beckie spent all day health checking and ensuring all of their needs were met and the evidence gathered.”

“All of the team, volunteers and our supporters would all agree that Beckie is an amazing team member and we are all so grateful to her for everything she does.”

Beckie Bailey GSPCA Animal Care Assistant said “I really can’t believe I’ve been shortlisted for these amazing awards.”

“I was so shocked when I had the phone call I really didn’t know what to say.”

“Yesterday they came to film me for the awards which was great but a little scary.”

“It was a great day as they got to see me feed baby birds, care for the reptiles, see the hedgehogs, the diabetic dog I care for and even saw show a VIP guest some of the animals which was Baroness Fookes.”

“I really love my job and working with the animals and really looking forward to the awards night.”

Steve continued "We have a wonderful caring team of 30 paid staff and over 80 active volunteers and help over 3000 animals a year and we are all wishing Beckie good luck for the ADCH and Petplan Awards."

“Incredibly this is the third time we have had a member of our team as a finalist in these awards having had Yvonne Chauvel and Geoff George reaching the final also in the last few years which for the size charity we are in comparison to so many others is very humbling for the whole team at the GSPCA.”

“Two weeks today we should know the results as it all takes place in Birmingham at the ADCH Conference and Awards evening in front of 500 animal professionals and volunteers.”

"We will all course keep everyone up to date on how Beckie gets on at the awards evening later this month."

“We also had a nomination for the whole team, Geoff George, Seb Goman, Michelle Champion, Kieran Trebert and our President Vet Jon Knight who all had certificates to recognise their nominations.”

Recently a film crew visited on behalf of the awards and we look forward to the GSPCA being show cased in front of 500 charity workers, vets, companies, retailers and volunteers.
