On Monday after 6 weeks of intensive care a gannet that was rescued by Animal Collection Officer Geoff George covered in oil and very sick was released back to the wild.

John as he was named, was rescued from St Peter Port harbour and was in such bad condition on entry that without the expertise and care of the Shelter team he would certainly have died in the wild.

The GSPCA has had one of the busiest starts to any year with the wild weather which killed thousands of seabirds and injured many more.

Yvonne Chauvel Senior Animal Care Assistant said 'John has been up and down with her health as we managed to sex her before her release.'

'She was covered in oil and couldn't hold her food down to start off with, but we managed to pull her through after a lot of hard work.'

'It's fantastic to know she's back where she belongs.'

Geoff George ACO said 'It is always a joy to be part of a rescue to the release.'

'We released him at the North of the Island near Beaucette Marina and it was a joy to see.'

'After the horrendous weather it has been great to get those we have rescued back to the wild.'

'The two seal pups Trinity and Eden are doing very well and it won't be long until they will be back in the wild but in the mean time next week we are offering tours to see them and the other animals at the Shelter.'

'Viewing the seals will be behind one way glass and the limited prebooked trips will need to be very quiet.'

'We are still appealing for donations for the seal pups and if you can help please call the Shelter on 257261 or go to our Just giving page http://www.justgiving.com/Gspca-Guernsey1.'
