This month we celebrate 150 years with GSPCA Purple Month and without volunteers we would have never of been founded.
On 11th February, 1873, a meeting was convened in the rooms of the Societe Guernesiaise “for the purpose of considering the expediency of establishing in the Island a Societe for the suppression of Cruelty to Animals” and the Dean of Guernsey was called to the Chair. The Patron of the Society was His Excellency Lt. General Froome.
At the GSPCA we are extremely busy and we are currently looking for new volunteers to join the team as well as recruiting new staff.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “We have had an incredibly busy 2022 at the GSPCA and we kick off the New Year with our first Volunteer Induction Evening this Wednesday at 630pm.”
“Volunteers help in all areas of the work of the Shelter and from animal care to gardening, reception to the ambulance, painting to dog training, our charity shop in town to the many events and so much more there really is something for everyone.”
At the GSPCA we are extremely busy and we are currently looking for new volunteers to join the team and recruiting new staff.

All three started and helped over the weekend from walking dogs to caring for cats.

The GSPCA are delighted that we will be holding the second volunteer induction of 2022 after a 2 year break due to covid.
The volunteer age for inductions is now from 16 years and up and we have opportunities in all parts of our activities here at the GSPCA.
The evening starts with introductions followed by an induction into our work, the opportunities and cover all aspects of health and safety to enable the new volunteers to understand the operations and what we do at the GSPCA.
At the GSPCA we continue to operate a cautious approach, but we are again recruiting volunteers that are 18 or older.
There are many opportunities to help our 24/7 work and for those interested please complete a volunteer application form and send it to [email protected]

The GSPCA really could not do so much without its amazing team of volunteers and supporters.
From the Committee to those that walk dogs, fund raisers to those that help with admin, dog trainers to cattery cleaners, gardeners to those helping with IT, the companies who send their staff to help to so many others the list goes on and on.
The last 18 months has certainly been incredibly difficult and especially so for the GSPCA and providing our 24/7 services with all the bio-security rules in place, and many still as the team still work in many challenging circumstances.
With 2020 well underway you might be thinking of getting involved with something new.
Throughout 2020 we have Volunteer Inductions planned for those interested in helping with our wide and diverse work.
The first of these takes place on Wednesday 15th January 2020 at 6.30pm and all are welcome.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “What another amazing year 2019 was with our hundreds of volunteers helping us in so many ways.”
On Monday we hold 9th Volunteer Induction of 2019 having inducted 87 volunteers through this years events.
We often see 10 or more new volunteers, placements, work experience and individuals looking to help us at the GSPCA and if 13 come along to the next event we will have inducted 100 volunteers through them this year.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “We cannot achieve so much without the incredible volunteers and team we have here at the GSPCA.”
“We love to meet new volunteers and our next induction is at 630pm on Monday 12th August.”
On the 29th May 2 staff from Man Fund Management (Guernsey) Limited attended the GSPCA to give up a day in the office to help with the work around the Shelter.
The day was started with a quick induction followed by a picture at the front of the GSPCA and were then set to work with GSPCA Community and Training Officer Tim Pellett.
Tim said “It was lovely to meet the staff from Man who worked really hard helping in many areas around the GSPCA and with the animals.”
