Survey from the GSPCA - With the UK making it compulsory to microchip dogs what should we do in Guernsey for our pets?

At the GSPCA we help thousands of lost and found animals in Guernsey every year and we would like to know your views in relation to compulsory microchipping of pets in Guernsey.

In the UK many dog owners will be unprepared for new legislation which makes it compulsory to microchip their pets from April 2016.

Statistics from Petlog show that Guernsey has more cats than any other area in the UK

In Guernsey the GSPCA estimate that there are approximately 8,000 to 10,000 pet dogs and also the same number in cats owned.

This estimation has recently been reinforced with the Petlog statistical data which shows in their figures that Guernsey is an island of cat owners.

The Mirror recently looked at cat microchipping data from Petlog to determine where most cats live, and the most popular cats in each area.

Missing a tortoise?

Currently the GSPCA have 4 stray tortoise.

Last year we saw a total of nine stray tortoise and this year it looks like even more may be escaping and visiting the GSPCA.

Pickles the cat who had skin cancer is now in her new home

The GSPCA team were overjoyed yesterday as Pickles the cat went off to her new home.

After months of care and an operation to remove Pickles ears where the skin cancer was identified the staff and volunteers were able to wave her off to her new home.

At this time of year when the sun is shining the tips of some cats and some dogs ears can be affected by the suns harmful rays.

Today some Guernsey Cows popped by to visit the GSPCA team

Every day the GSPCA have visitors in all sorts of shapes and sizes but the team had an extra big surprise when after lunch a local herd of cattle popped through the hedge into the Shelter grounds.

Fortunately, the team care for, rescue and work with all kinds of animals and after a quick radio the team worked together to ensure they made their way back home with their owner.

Anna Carre Senior Animal Care Assistant said 'Well what an unusual afternoon we've had today.'

Please help us find the owner of this stray tortoise

The second stray tortoise we have had in at the Shelter is still looking for her owner.

If you think that this may be your lost tortoise then please call the GSPCA on 257261 or pop into the Animal Shelter in St Andrews.

The tortoise was found in the Vale area on the 18th May and is a female Hermans adult.
