All year round the GSPCA help hedgehogs as they struggle to hibernate due to our mild winter temperatures.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “Hedgehogs need the temperature to drop below 5c before they really go into hibernation.”

“As Guernsey experiences such mild winters hedgehogs don’t really hibernate like they do in other parts of the UK and world.”

“This means they have to find food and all they require even through the stormy weather we have recently experienced.”

Help the Guernsey Hedgehogs and the 113 at the GSPCA this Winter

Submitted by Steve on 15:58, 28th Nov, 2018 | 0

At the GSPCA we currently have 113 hedgehogs in our care and they keep on coming.

Many will think that hedgehogs will be tucked up for the Winter by now but this is far from the truth.

Every day the GSPCA are rescuing and helping hedgehogs in need and many only a month or two old.

Publicity for hedgehogs often includes that they hibernate during the Winter months but unless the temperature is below 5C they struggle to huddle down for what should be a long slumber.

Last Winter the GSPCA received large number of calls from concerned members of public about horses and other animals in wet and muddy fields and once again we are preparing for a similar season with the current weather conditions.

Unfortunately due to the very wet Winter we had to endure here in Guernsey last year the GSPCA had a number of animals that were reported to the GSPCA in concerning conditions.

Lorna Prince GSPCA Animal Welfare Manager said ‘With such a wet Winter last year many animals were affected, both wild and domestic.’
