Dolphin rescue at Pembroke Bay

Today the GSPCA were called out to rescue a dolphin stranded on Pembroke Bay that was rolling in the surf.

Geoff George Animal Collection Officer responded to the call that came in at midday and we quickly contacted local vet John Knight who has many years working with dolphins and similar species around the world to attend the scene.

The Common Dolphin was extremely tired and there was no way that the animal could be re-floated with the rough gale force weather.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager called the St Johns Ambulance who rallied a volunteer team to lend assistance and were invaluable with their help and also the help of the kind members of public at the location.

A decision was made to transport the dolphin to Beaucette Marina where with their kind permission it would be much safer to re-float.

The animal was treated by the vet and once at the Marina the team led by John Knight and Geoff George entered the water in wet suits to ensure the dolphin was cared for.

Although initially the dolphin was unsure of the surroundings the animal slowly settled in and began swimming around.

Geoff George ACO said 'The poor dolphin has been through a lot today but we are hopeful that with a bit of rest the animal will be strong enough to venture out of the marina.'

'It is never easy re-floating any marine mammal and currently eyes are on the ground at Beaucette Marina watching to ensure the dolphin is okay.'

'At the GSPCA we are always at the end of the phone to help an animal in need and we must thank everyone that was involved and helped today.'

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said 'We are so lucky to have a fantastic team that are able to respond to any situation and it shows what a fantastic community we have here in Guernsey when everyone pulls together.'

'A huge thank you to the St Johns volunteers and everyone involved that have helped today and a special mention to Geoff George and John Knight for all their efforts with the rescue.'

'The work never stops here at the GSPCA and with over 200 animals in our care including our 2 seal pups we are always looking for support and with our 141st birthday next week we are asking anyone that can help us raise funds to join in with the GSPCA Purple Week .'

The common dolphin is the name given to two species of dolphin making up the genus Delphinus. Prior to the mid-1990s, most taxonomists only recognised one species in this genus, the common dolphin Delphinus delphis
