The GSPCA is a very busy environment, with a site that is nearly 4 acres.

We are always extremely busy rescuing and caring for the many animals that come through the door which means it is often difficult to get many of the maintenance jobs around the site completed.

The Shelter has hundreds on metres of fencing which separates our paddocks around site as well as a stable that were falling in a state of disrepair but we were in luck…..

After chatting to the Guernsey Probation Team earlier this year a relationship was forged for groups of individuals requiring to do their community hours with a team leader would help around the Animal Shelter doing the many jobs which would otherwise take staff and volunteers away from the much needed animal care work.

Since March once or twice a week groups of 4 to 8 people on average serving their community hours have been brought up to the Shelter to help repair and coat the fences and out buildings including our stable which housed our two donkeys Daisy and Naomi earlier this year.Dizzy and Naomi at the GSPCA Animal Shelter, donkeys in Guernsey

If we had to do this at the Shelter ourselves it would have taken 100’s of man hours and if we hadn’t we would have certainly had to replace it costing 1000’s of pounds.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said ‘We are so grateful to the Guernsey Probation Team for all they have done and all they are doing.’  ‘They have helped with everything from painting fences to preparing for open days, cutting grass to clearing pathes around site.’  ‘They have helped tidy our Pet Memorial Garden, but we are looking for donations to help landscape to give visitors an area to sit and reflect their lost loved pets.’
