Today the GSPCA with St Andrews Floral Group celebrated the official opening of the first Channel Island Poison Garden, an educational area to help teach pet owners of dogs and cats the plants to take care when planting.

This has been all thanks to three major sponsors Vets4Pets Guernsey, Island Dog Training Club and the Guernsey Kennel Club.

But the thanks doesn't stop there a major thank you must go to Steve and the Work to Benefit team that have put hundreds of hours into the project.

Also hundreds of volunteers from businesses, groups, clubs, schools, the Shelter and the St Andrews Floral Group have come together in this amazing community project.

Ann Wragg Group Leader of St Andrews Floral Group said "The Poison Garden at the GSPCA was officially opened on 23rd June by Ginny Heaume."

"Whilst it brought back sad memories to her as it was as a result of hearing of the story of the tragic death of her two dogs, Tally and Macy, that the garden was created."

"It is to raise awareness of the toxic qualities of many common garden plants which can cause discomfort to your pets."

"We are grateful to the Sponsors, Vets4Pets Guernsey, Guernsey Kennel Club and Island Dog Training Club for their support."

"It could also have not been achieved without the wonderful landscaping works carried out by Steve and his team from the CEPS programme."

Ann Wragg, Leader of St Andrew's Floral Group thanked everyone for making a vision to become a reality and providing an attractive feature in the grounds of the Animal Shelter as well as having an important message.

Ann continued "The Poison Garden and grounds of the GSPCA are open to the Public with a donation of £2.00 per person."

"Tickets are available at Reception and visits to other parts of the Shelter can be arranged with the GSPCA through their web-site."

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "What a wonderful morning we had officially opening the Poison garden at the GSPCA."

"The conservation and gardening projects have been a massive community project led by St Andrews Floral Group and the Shelter has been transformed not just for visitors to enjoy but the animals and wildlife both in our care and in the wild."

"The idea was sparked after Ann from St Andrews Floral Group heard Ginny talk to JKT on BBC Guernsey about the sad loss of her two dogs after eating poisonous plants."

"Many of us plant things in our garden without thinking and the new Poison Garden at the GSPCA and leaflets are the first ever of its kind in the Channel Islands."

"We are hugely grateful to everyone involved and all that have donated to make this project become a reality."

"The Shelter and garden is open 7 days a week between 11am and 4pm for a small donation to look around, see some of the animals and enjoy the garden and picnic area."
