During the early hours of this morning Jessie the stray beagle cross took the bait and was caught in the GSPCA dog trap along the west coast of Guernsey.

The team at the GSPCA have been working since the 28th April to capture and reunite this very nervous rescue dog with her owners.

A call came in this morning and the GSPCA responded immediately with the volunteer warden on duty and GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne making their way as quickly as they could to the scene to collect the trap, carry it to the van and transport it back to the Shelter in St Andrews so she could be released in the safety of a confined area.

The GSPCA team were elated and excited as they made their way to the location where she was caught after nearly two months of work and hundreds of hours from the team and all were looking forward to getting her back home safe and sound.

When the GSPCA team arrived just after 6am their hearts sank as they approached the trap as they found it empty.

The wildlife camera being used to track her movements was checked and it quickly became apparent that shortly after the call to alert us of her capture a couple had walked up to the trap and had released her.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "I cannot explain how excited we were this morning to receive the call that Jessie the stray beagle cross which has been out for nearly two months had been caught in our trap, as myself and the team at the GSPCA have been working day and night to capture her."

"We have followed her movements since the 28th April and we are extremely thankful to the wonderful public support and help."

"When we arrived at the trap location early this morning our hearts sank as we discovered the trap closed with no dog present."

"On inspection of the wildlife camera we have located in the trap showed Jessie's movements back and forth to the trap during the night and setting it off, trapping her safely as the sun was rising this morning."

"Shortly after the phone call from a member of public who was out walking their dog and whilst we were driving to the location a couple had approached the trap and after a few minutes opened the door and let Jessie go despite a large GSPCA sign with our telephone number and website in front of them."

"As you can imagine all of the team at the GSPCA are extremely frustrated with the situation as no matter what the intentions of the couple were finding Jessie in the trap it now makes catching her with a dog trap again extremely difficult."

"We will continue to bait and check the trap and area where she has been and appeal to anyone that spots her to call us immediately on 257261."

"We are looking at other methods to capture Jessie although a trap is the safest and least stressful way for her."

"Our out of hours emergency service is run by emergency volunteer wardens who give up their free time to help save animals every day in Guernsey."

"If anyone would like to help us provide our ambulance cover between 6pm and 8am each night or during the weekend please do get in touch with me at the GSPCA."

GSPCA relaunch capture for Jessie after her release from the trap this morning whilst on route to collect...

We are working closely with Jessie's owners to help in the search of their dog and we all appreciate the wonderful public support and reports so far.

We would like to highlight that Jessie is a very nervous and timid beagle cross who has only recently been adopted from a UK rescue and is scared by people and loud noises.

She is an 8 year old, female, white and brindle beagle cross with no collar.

If you do spot Jessie please call us at the GSPCA on 01481 257261

Please do not approach or try to catch her as it is likely to scare her away and not help with her safe capture.

If she is in a secure area where you can close a gate or door then please do so and give us a call at the Shelter immediately.

With all reports the time, location and direction of movement is extremely important.

If you are able to get a picture or video clip this would really help.

At the GSPCA we have team members at the end of a phone and manning our ambulance 24 hours a day.

We are doing everything we possibly can and our team are on stand by to help in the safe capture.

There is a reward for her safe return of £200.

To call the GSPCA please ring 01481 257261 and if you have any pictures please email them to [email protected]

We continue to help in the search of Bertie the stray schnauzer that went missing in November last year, but sadly we have had no reports in some time but if you see him please follow the same advice as above.
