Last Tuesday students from Delancey Campus came along to visit the GSPCA.

The purpose of the visit was to fulfil enrichment and practical experience opportunities for the students by engaging with realistic work experience, meeting with potential employers and discussing volunteering avenues.

The access course promotes learning outside the classroom with such practical experiences and held at different locations around the community.  It also helps with confidence building, independent living, self esteem and preparing for work.

As part of the visit the students were able to see the various projects that are currently evolving around the shelters' buildings and garden areas.

Tim Pellett GSPCA Community and Training Officer said “We discussed how the students could potentially help us by using the skills they have learnt whilst on their access course, such as gardening.”

“The tour continued with a visit to several departments and meeting key staff such as Anna in the upper floor Cats department, Seb in Boarding Dogs and Beckie in Hospital and with our Reptiles.”

“The students were able to interact with our resident bearded dragon 'Nellie' and as a result were able to identify that several students were willing to discuss how they could help out and offered to volunteer at the GSPCA.”

“Finally, the students were able to 'grill' me by asking a series of their pre-prepared questions on life at the animal shelter.”

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “Education and show casing the work we do at the GSPCA is at the heart of our aims and objectives and it was lovely to see the students enjoy their tour and talk last week.”

“We are happy to go out to do talks on our work and for those interested in a tour please do get in touch.”

“During half term we have Spooky Tours for the children and places are limited so please get in touch as soon as possible to book their place.”
