Players in the fun doubles tennis tournament at the Guernsey Tennis Centre which raised money for the GSPCA at the Indoor Tennis Centre.

Front: Pam West and Liz Dye.

Tennis tournament raises money for the GSPCA.  TENNIS players battled it out in a friendly doubles tournament to raise more than £1,000 for the GSPCA.  Organised by the Guernsey Tennis Club, a total of 32 players, including members from other clubs, took to the courts during the morning for the charity event.  The tournament was organised by Rob West and Andy Privett.

Mr West, a tennis coach and club manager, said it was the fifth year it had held a charity tournament.  ‘It is nice to put on social activities with the club, especially at Christmas time, and it’s also nice to do something for charities.  ‘We try and pick local causes and because we hadn’t chosen an animal charity before we thought we would go with the GSPCA.’  Players had to pay £10 to take part and also brought along a dish each for lunch, which they all enjoyed after the tournament. There was also a raffle and and auction, including animal-themed items.

Denise Johnson has been playing tennis for about eight years.  The Guernsey Tennis Club member said it was fun to get involved in the charity matches. ‘It’s also really nice because we get a few members from other clubs joining in so it’s also a bit of a social,’ she said. ‘Everyone just gets together to raise money for the charity and there’s a bit of friendly competition.’

GSPCA manager Steve Byrne was delighted with the £1,030.20 raised.

‘It was wonderful when we were approached by the Guernsey Tennis Club, who were planning a doubles tournament and event in aid of the animals at the shelter and to help the work we do,’ he said. ‘They had an amazing event and from all at the GSPCA we want to say a huge thank you to Guernsey Tennis Club and of course to all who supported what was a great event.’
