Over the last few months the GSPCA have had in intensive and medical care over 70 guinea pigs many of which were suffering from a fungus called ringworm.

We were asked to help take in the poorly guinea pigs earlier in the Summer which have been under veterinary treatment and required quarantine care costing £1000's.

All at the GSPCA were delighted when last week the vet confirmed that they were fit and healthy as it meant that the isolation procedures in place could be relaxed.  As ringworm is a zoonotic disease the team at the GSPCA have had to wear special clothing, gloves, foot covers and even use foot bathes and separate equipment for their care.

To be able to care for the large number of guinea pigs the team at the GSPCA had to convert areas of the Shelter and call in extra help 7 days a week for the last few months due to the care and medical treatment needed for the guinea pigs.

With these adorable cute little rodents being given the all clear by the vet the GSPCA are now looking for loving new homes for a variety of young and adult guinea pigs some of which were born at the GSPCA.

From long to short haired, those with funny hair styles to youngsters each guinea pig has its own name and character and all are in need of a forever home.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said "We are so delighted that after months of medical care all of the 70 guinea pigs are now able to find new and loving homes."

"The team at the GSPCA with the veterinary team from Isabelle Vets have worked so hard to care for the guinea pigs and cure their ringworm which is something humans can catch if not treated correctly."

"We are now looking for special homes for each of the guinea pigs and anyone interested needs to pop into the Shelter ideally between 11am and 4pm to chat to the team and fill in a form."

Helen Holmes GSPCA Admin Manager and team member who has been caring for the guinea pigs said "It's been hard work caring for the many guinea pigs as we have had to wear protective clothing all through the summer months but it is wonderful how well they have done and we are all looking forward to finding them new and loving homes."

"It has been practically a full time job caring for and medicating all of the guinea pigs and we are so pleased that they are ready now for rehoming."

Yvonne Chauvel Senior Animal Care Assistant said "It's not just the lovely guinea pigs we have looking for homes as we have birds, rabbits, ferrets, snakes, lizards, cats, degus, fish and many more in need of loving new homes."

"Many are on our website but anyone looking to adopt a pet please give us a call or pop in between 11am and 4pm each day."
