St Andrew’s Floral Group has been working with the GSPCA to develop the area around their existing pond to create an area for everyone to enjoy the lovely peaceful setting of the Animal Shelter and provide a better natural haven for wildlife.
A framework of allergy friendly, native trees and hedging will be planted in Autumn to soften the area and create a pleasant picnic area for visitors and provide a green space of benefit to both the animals being cared for in the Animal Shelter and wild visitors. Winding paths, wildflower patches, insect hotels, nest boxes and nectar rich planting will encourage a living landscape and a natural setting for all.
This is part of a long-term plan including the development of the existing pond with a new liner, create flowing water and a bog garden to provide a variety of habitats.
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager is delighted that the project is underway. Emphasis has always been for the well-being of the animals in care but this will provide a wonderful calming and green environment to improve their recovery as well as attracting wild life.
Nigel Clarke of Green Legacy has already pledged his support and help is sought from other Organisations to assist with the project either in manpower terms or financial assistance. Any help would be appreciated whether from digger operators to provide the new layout or help with planting.
Ann Wragg from St Andrew’s Floral Group says that “she would like this to be one large Community project to develop further the lovely setting of the Shelter and provide homes for our dwindling wildlife as well as a more natural setting for the animals being cared for.”
Anyone interested in helping with the Project should contact Ann Wragg, Co-ordinator St Andrew’s Floral Group a.hw@icloud.com or Steve Byrne, GSPCA Manager on 257261 or email stevejbyrne@gspca.org.gg
