We are pleased to announce that Temperance the seal pup who was rescued at the start of November last year has more than doubled his weight.

The thinnest ever seal pup we have rescued here in Guernsey at only 11kg is now up to 28.2kg.

Head carer of Temperance GSPCA Animal Collection Officer and Marine Mammal Carer at the GSPCA Geoff George is pleased to report the huge gain in weight and improvements in health.

It is even more special as we enter the last two days of GSPCA Purple Week celebrating 145 years of helping animals in Guernsey.

Geoff said “Temperance was rescued last November at only 11kgs making him the thinnest grey seal pup we have rescued in Guernsey.”

“We have weighed him and we are really pleased to report he has more than doubled his weight and is now 28.2kg.”

“Temperance is eating plenty of fish and we are so thankful for all of the donations towards his care but he has some months to go.”

“We are hopeful to put him in the outer pools very soon to get him fit for the wild which will be in the Spring.”

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “It is wonderful to see Temperance the seal pup grow stronger each day.”

“He was painfully thin when he was first rescued and to see him more than double his weight is amazing as when he was rescued he should have been 40kg but was found at just 11kg.”

“Temperance is the 6th grey seal we have rescued in as many years here in Guernsey and we are all hopeful he carries on improving so we can get him in the outer pools and back to the wild in the next few months.”

“Temperance eats dozens of fish every day and we continue to appeal for donations towards his care.”

“We have had a great GSPCA Purple Week celebrating 145 years and to see Temperance doing so well adds to the celebrations.”

“The wildlife building is one of our priorities for the future as with nearly 100 hedgehogs in our care and 1500 wild birds through our doors every year it is one of our main focuses to rebuild to make sure we have the facilities we need for the future.”

“Every year we help over 2000 wild animals and birds and every penny donated helps feed, care, rehabilitate them and also we are trying to raise funds to help for our Redevelopment plans.”
