The team at the GSPCA have been devastated this morning as despite around the clock care 'Rio' the common seal pup rescued last week passed away in the early hours of this morning.

Rio was the thinnest ever seal pup to be rescued at the GSPCA and was extremely weak, dehydrated and had a number of injuries when she arrived last week.  Staff have been battling to keep her alive and build her strength in an isolated intensive care heated seal room.

Over the last 5 years the GSPCA have rescued, rehabilitated and released 5 grey seal pups back to the wild. When Rio arrived last weak she was the weakest seal pup to ever arrive at the Shelter and barely made the journey from Alderney to Guernsey.

When she arrived from Alderney last week she could hardly move and despite showing some signs of improvement she passed away this morning.

The GSPCA are talking to veterinary experts and we are looking to carry out a postmortem to determine why she was so ill and cause of her death.

As you can imagine it is a very sad day for the team at the GSPCA who have done all they can for Rio who was so close to death when she was found last week.
