The GSPCA have been recently contacted by Janie Rabet who is actively helping long term cats that are still missing.
Janie Rabet recently shared on facebook
‘HELP PLEASE!
I'm trying to build an easy to search database of long lost (more than one month) cats in Guernsey that we can all refer to easily on GuernseyCats.com
Could you check the cats listed on GuernseyCats.com and if you know of a long lost cat not listed, please either:
1. Point me to the cat owners original post (not Animal Aid/GSPCA where possible) of their cat.
or
2. Tag someone whose cat has been missing for a long time.
or
3. Share this post
It's unfortunate but over time, their posts here get lost and unless the cat owner is still actively searching for their cat, that cat gets forgotten by the wider community. I want to ensure that doesn't happen.
We've seen so many cats here get returned to their owners many years later that potentially could have been found sooner, lets try and make that happen! Once complete, I'd like to contact the Guernsey Press and see if we can get a page listing all of these cats.’
Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “A day doesn’t go by when the GSPCA has stray, sick and injured animals to help and cats are one of the most needing our help.”
“Every year 100’s of cats go missing and thankfully many are reunited but some take much longer than others and sadly some sadly may never be reunited.”
“We have recently been contacted by Janie who has set a goal to help long term missing cats with GuernseyCats.com .”
“Rarely is there a day that goes by that we don’t have a lost pet reported which you can see by visiting our social media as when they are reported if we have permission to share online we will do so and hold a lost and found list at the GSPCA which helps 100’s of cats every year and over 1000 lost and found animals every year.”
“We have a page full of lost and found advice here https://www.gspca.org.gg/services/lost-found-advice and this is the link to report a lost pet https://service.sheltermanager.com/asmservice?account=gspca&method=online_form_html&formid=18 .”
“All of these cats in the featured picture have been missing for more than a month and Janine has spoken to all the owners in the last 10 days to confirm they are still missing.”
“The 100’s of strays we help through our doors sadly only around 80% are microchipped which causes much heart ache trying to reunite them for the cost of £4.99 at the GSPCA to get your cat chipped it could greatly speed up the process.”
“Sadly microchipping is not compulsory in Guernsey unlike many other countries and we have featured this fact and wish to see changes in our manifesto which you can see in this link https://www.gspca.org.gg/blog/gspca-manifesto-and-invite-standing-candidates-visit-gspca .”
“Another huge challenge we face is that 150 to 300 cats are hit by cars each year and many sadly don’t survive and again when they aren’t microchipped it can cause a real challenge finding the owner and also there is no legal responsibility to report cats hit by vehicles which when we have surveyed the community 86% believe it should be law and 97.5% to complete our survey thing it should be law to microchip cats compulsory.”

Steve continued “There is nothing worse that your pet going missing and not knowing where it is and we support all that help reunite those owners and carers of animals.”
“When a stray animal is brought into the GSPCA we try all we can to find the owner and although the vast majority are claimed and reunited mostly the same day a small percentage especially those not microchipped are unclaimed and we then need to find them homes.”
“Some are microchipped and the details aren’t kept up to date which is so important and if you are not sure please do contact us or speak to your vets if you do not know how to contact the microchip data base for your pet.”
“For those looking to help give a home to a pet you can see some on website and social media and often we help what we call home to homes which are cats with their owners wanting to go to a direct home rather coming through our cattery which for many benefits helping us with space and the cat go to a loving new home as quickly as possible, but we will always help when needed.”
