Wednesday evening and yesterday the GSPCA took a stall to the Careers Show 2013 for the first time and were overwhelmed by inquiries.

Although the Shelter rarely has vacancies the GSPCA are always looking for volunteers to help in a variety of areas and this was of a huge interest to many of the visitors at the Careers Show.

For many of the Year 9 students it is the first time they are able to help at the Shelter, as to become a volunteer the minimum age is 14 years.

This meant that hoards of Year 9's swamped the GSPCA stand to find out how they could help.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager and Darren Monday one of the Shelter volunteers talked to hundreds of visitors young and old about careers and volunteering in animal welfare and care.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said 'What a lovely two days we had talking to hundreds of interested visitors about the work of the Shelter and both how they could help and how by helping it can benefit them.'

'Much of the focus was placed on how volunteering can increase skills, knowledge and improve a CV.'

'When volunteering at the GSPCA we ask those interested to complete an application form, then we arrange a short interview and follow that with an induction and a booklet which for many of the younger volunteers is the first time helping in a professional work place.'

'We have plenty of information on volunteering at the Shelter on our website and when we do have vacancies they are also advertised online.'

'Thank you to Darren for volunteering, to all those who visited our stand and also to the Careers Show team for a wonderful event.'
