Can your pets party like a #GSPCAPartyAnimal?

Submitted by Steve on 12:49, 2nd Mar, 2021 | 0

The GSPCA is asking islanders to help celebrate its 148th birthday by tagging the charity in photos of their pets in their best virtual party outfits on social media using #GSPCAPartyAnimal.

Manager of the GSPCA, Steve Byrne said, “Like many others who had birthdays during lockdown, we didn’t get the party or celebrations we were wishing for. So, to embrace the Guernsey Together spirit and lockdown restrictions, we’re moving our celebrations online and asking local pets and their owners to get involved virtually.”

Today is #WalkingYourDogDay could you do a sponsor challenge to support our work

Submitted by Steve on 15:11, 22nd Feb, 2021 | 0

Dog owners around the Bailiwick each day enjoy our stunning islands while walking their dogs and today is #WalkingYourDogDay

We would normally have an average 30-40 dogs in our care at the GSPCA but as people are unable to travel due to Covid we only see a small number of boarding dogs and thankfully very few needing to be rehomed.

This has hit our income greatly as our boarding helps raise half of the running costs of the GSPCA so we are asking if you could do a sponsored event to raise funds for our 24/7 work.

Updates on #NationalWildlifeDay from the GSPCA

Submitted by Steve on 14:33, 22nd Feb, 2021 | 0

Each year the GSPCA helps in excess of 2000 wild animals and birds.

Last year we saw a record breaking number of hedgehogs with over 700 through our doors and we currently have over 140 in our care.

All three seal pups continue to do well with Joey as you can see from the little white coat pup is eating extremely well on his own in our pools with Ellie and Titan who also progress well.

Sadly we continue to see very sick pigeons as the Pigeon Paramyxovirus spreads across the Island and we have had birds and reports from most Guernsey Parishes.

Submitted by Steve on 16:33, 18th Feb, 2021 | 0

It is rare to see ducklings at this time of year in Guernsey but on the 12th February Dave the duckling was found as an orphan in a St Sampsons garden.

Beckie Bailey GSPCA Animal Care Assistant said “Dave is growing up very quickly, so today we are going to up grade his ‘pond’, which basically means Dave will have a slightly bigger bowl) in his ICU.”

“The donated towel seems to be very relevant to Dave’s surprise of a bigger pond, he will be a swimming pro soon!!.”

Record breaking year for hedgehogs and Intensive Care Unit Appeal #GSPCAPurpleWeek

Submitted by Steve on 16:07, 18th Feb, 2021 | 0

2019 the GSPCA saw a record breaking 618 hedgehogs come through the doors and 2020 was even bigger with an amazing 729 hedgehogs.

Despite lockdown the GSPCA has been incredibly busy and especially with 25 hedgehogs in since 1st January with 141 currently in our care.

Due to the huge numbers and many extremely sick hedgehogs we are in desperate need of additional Intensive Care Units which cost £600 each, but really help save lives.

As we celebrate 148 years this week with our #GSPCAPurpleWeek could you help us help hedgehogs in Guernsey.

Sadly through #GSPCAPurpleWeek Pigeon Paramyxovirus continues to kill pigeons in Guernsey

Submitted by Steve on 16:10, 16th Feb, 2021 | 0

The GSPCA continues to help growing numbers of pigeons with Pigeon Paramyxovirus.

Steve Byrne GSPCA Manager said “Since the 1st January the GSPCA can sadly confirm that Pigeon Paramyxovirus has killed over 100 pigeons in Guernsey and numbers continue to grow.”

“Every day and night the GSPCA are called out to very sick and injured pigeons and due to the terrible effects of the disease there is less than a one in ten chance we can help save those we are called out to.”
