UPDATE - Guernsey Dog Owners Warned of Substance on Beaches & Take Extreme Care When Along the Coast

Submitted by Steve on 12:47, 9th Dec, 2014 | 0

This morning the GSPCA attended the Richmond end of Vazon beach and were faced with large quantities of a substance which could be very dangerous to dogs.

Yesterday the GSPCA sent out a warning regarding reports of possible palm oil being spotted along the coast.

GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne this morning collected a large carrier bag of the white waxy substance along the beach and spoke to a number of dog walkers on the beach.

We have been in touch with the Environment Department who have staff removing the substance from our beaches.

This time last year the Environment Department warned dog owners to keep pets away from any white substance they may find on local beaches and the GSPCA are asking dog owners to take care as there have been reports over the weekend.

It is believed the substance which could be Palm Oil and has been seen Vazon and at Portlet.

Last year the Environment Department instructed States Works to remove any substance of this description which may be found on beaches.

Update on Bertie as the search continues

Submitted by Steve on 18:06, 2nd Dec, 2014 | 0

We continue to search for Bertie and log reports from around Guernsey

We have had a number of recent reports in the Perelle area, which could have been Bertie, but we still have no pictures to confirm it was him.

Staff, volunteers and many wonderful kind souls are continuing to help in the search for Bertie, as well as displaying posters to help advertise him.

Previous sightings have been around the Grandes Rocque, Barras Lane and near St Sampson's High School.

Update on the search for Bertie & to download a poster to help in the search (Wednesday 26th November)

Although in the last 24 hours we have had no 100% confirmed sightings of Bertie, the day before yesterday in the morning there was a possible sighting near to his home on La Hure Mare Road just off Route Summerfield, which could mean that he may be very close to his home.

We did have a call of a possible stray dog last night in the Perelle area, which could have been Bertie, but we still have no pictures to confirm it was him.

Update - The search for Bertie continues

Submitted by Steve on 16:22, 19th Nov, 2014 | 0

Earlier today we were all very excited with a possible report of Bertie out in the day in a garden, but sadly it wasn't him and the dog that it turned out to be is soon to be back with its owner.

Despite staff, volunteers and the wonderful public who are watching out for Bertie we have not had a firm report in the last 36 hours, although there was a possible sighting at Barras Lane in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Most recent sightings have been around the Grandes Rocque area and near St Sampson's High School.

GSPCA helping in the search for Bertie - any sightings please do not chase after him, but call 257261

Today at the GSPCA we met with Clive and Lynn McMinn to help in the search of Bertie.

As many will know on Saturday near the Vale Primary School around 6pm a 7 year old grey Schnauzer rescue dog called Bertie was scared by bonfire displays and escaped from his back garden.

The GSPCA are helping co-ordinate the search for Bertie and have a working map with sightings, locations, dates and times.

We would like to highlight that Bertie is a very timid little lad especially with men and people he doesn't know.

Friday June 27th is Bring Your Dog to Work Day

Submitted by Steve on 10:46, 19th Jun, 2014 | 0

Next Friday June 27th is Bring Your Dog to Work Day.

Having a dog in the room can make human colleagues more cooperative, reduce stress, increase job satisfaction and productivity.

When adopting a dog or any animal from the GSPCA we often ask how many hours potential owners may be at work.  Perhaps the question should actually be - are you able to take your dog to work?

Discussing the benefits of taking a dog to work might just result in a match with a dog we have in for homing.
